VSG Maintenance Group
Does your surgeon offer a support group?
I was at my surgeons Steven Hendrick office for a support meeting. They have started them up and I must say I loved it. I was going to his old office and all the patients except me had RNY. Now 2 years after he moved they started support again and there was 3 of us that had sleeve 3 people were going to get sleeve. 1 person had open RNY. Such a change from 2 years ago. My surgeon never tells people which weight loss surgery he likes best. But looking at the room last week seems like he is doing a lot of sleeves. does anyone else go to support meetings at there surgeons office?. I think it really helps me and it can help new people thinking of getting weight loss surgery.
I agree, times have definitely changed. We now have more sleevers in our group than other surgery types. Dr Kim has had a monthly support group since prior to my surgery. I go just about every month. We also have a large group of patients on a private Facebook support group. We are very active/supportive of each other on FB page. Our private group meets up once a month for some type fun activity. We also meet up for breakfast once a month. Most of us consider each other family. I'm friends now with several of the ladies and we walk or go to Zumba several nights a week. I love, love, love my surgeon's support system. I think I spend more time with them than my family. :)
My surgeon is in Mexico, and I'm in Atlanta, so I can't really go to a support group that he would sponsor (although he does have a yahoo group up and running that I used to belong to). My husband used a local surgeon for his sleeve, and he does have a support group, but the hospital is still an hour away after factoring in traffic... so not really an option on a regular basis for us.
However, I will say that I am very blessed with many great friends that I have found through this process who live close enough that we get together on a regular basis... once or twice a month... and to me, they are like my support group. They have all been sleeved as well and understand my challenges and victories... if we just happen to end up goofing off and talking about other things as well when we get together, then that's okay too lol.
Glad you found a group that you like. Support is definitely an important factor in making this a permanent change.
