Mom, my daughter is also overweight but she is doing workout videos when she gets home. Does she like sports? You may have to do some fun activity with her. I explain to my daughter that being healthy is the main objective in keeping weight down.

Mom - I started to worry that my kids weren't getting enough exercise. I have a 12 yo daughter and approaching the subject of her food choices was tricky to say the least. My kids love big exercise balls, so I decided to make a rule that they HAVE to be on an exercise ball whenever they are playing on the computer, watching TV, video games, etc, if they want to do it for more than 30 minutes. So, they can lounge on the couch for 30 minutes doing any of those non-moving things, but after the 30-minute mark, they have to be on a bouncy ball. It's been so much fun we all started sitting on bouncy balls.

Just a thought about a different approach to take. I still struggle with talking to my daughter about how she eats. So far, she is thin, but I know all to well how fast that can change.

178.8 today.  Happy placement day to your daughter and your family!  We try to celebrate adoption days in our house.  My 14 year old's is August 26 and my 7 year old's is March 29.  The older one has a bit of a weight problem - not much yet, but she could stand to lose about 20 lbs.  Like you, I am hesitant to approach this subject with her.  Whenever we talk about her clothing sizes, she says I'm calling her fat when I'm trying to help her recognize that the size 11 pants and the medium or large top is too tight, but she won't listen, so I don't bring it up. She's about 6' tall as well, so smaller clothes aren't long enough either, which adds to the clothes not fitting well.  I don't want her to suffer like I did as a teen and adult, but I'm afraid to say much, as this is prime time for lifelong body image issues and related eating issues to develop.  I try to talk, when I can, about healthy eating instead.  When she wears clothes that fit, I always make sure I compliment her on how nice she looks.
