calcium reaction

Hi all,
I have switched my calcium brand within the last month. I stopped using chewables several months ago. I bought a generic calcium citrate at CVS and while they were a little large, no big deal. I ran out of those and was at Costco and bought the Kirkland Calcium Citrate pills. These are just a bit larger and take some concentration to swallow correctly and do get stuck on occasion, but that's not the issue.

I take these pills and within about 3 minutes I have wave of nausea. It passes quickly, but whew, it is a bit unpleasant. Sometimes it's just a queasy feeling, but other times it's a bit more intense.

Does anyone know why this might be happening? I'm a bit befuddled because I truly do have the Sleeve of Steel and nothing has ever made me feel sick to my stomach in this manner.

Thanks for any insight you can offer.

I had the same thing happen with the pills so I went back to chewables. I thought it was because the pill was too big, but I don't really know. Have you tried eating, taking the pill, and eating again to kind of buffer the calcium? That's what I've done in the past when stuff made me sick.

hmmmm, i have used costco's calcium citrate for years with no issues. but you are right, the pills are huge!!   i really wish they would make them half that size and i would just take more. yeah, there are citrical petites but they are not that much smaller.

i bet it was just the big honkin' pill size that made you queasy.  thanks to my hernia repair, i too have an "iron" sleeve and i sit here and drink coffee and wash down all my pills. hope this gets better for you. cut pills in half?   diane

I have this same reaction to all Calcium Citrate pills.  I gave up because I was getting nauseatted with every brand I've tried.

Try grinding them and adding it to Greek yogurt? Maybe it's the size.
I have a hard time swallowing calcium pills. Even the petites feel stuck. It is the only thing that makes me vomit-or gag.

I have to cut my calcium pills in half or they get stuck too.  You can get a pill cutter for $6 or $7, which is what I use to cut mine.  Maybe try that before switching brands....it might just be the pill size.

I use a combination of pills, chewables, and a liquid calcium called "Blue Bonnet." There are some other liquids, such as Wellesse (sp), Lifetime, and others. I like the Blue Bonnet brand in lemon flavor. You might also check with the dieticians or your binder for other liquid calcium recommendations. I don't know about cutting a pill in half. The edges migh be a bit rough on your sleeve. I get tired of the horse pills, and use the chewables and liquid, sometimes in one day, which is fine to do.

Calcium has been my nightmare since I was sleeved. I have trouble swallowing the pills and they make me sick and constipated. I switched to liquid calcium citrate, which is SO much easier. I buy the Reviva brand--they used to carry them physically in Costcos, but now you have have to buy it from Costco online:
http://www.costco.com/Common/Search.aspx?whse=BC&topnav=&search=reviva&N=0&Ntt=reviva&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US

There are other liquid calcium citrates out there, but I like this one the best. No nausea, no pills, no constipation.

Thanks for the suggestion. I really need to get on top of the calcium. That is the one thing I mess up on.

Yep. I can't take calcium supplements (Citrate, etc).. It wrecks my whole day. I gave up and focused on eating calcium - swiss cheese, yogurt, etc. You might try a non-mineral, 'raw," calcium from seaweed. I tolerate them better, but not great.
