Daily Maintenance Weigh In - Wednesday August 8

Good morning. Happy Humpday. Today's weight 143.4, hooray!

My new toy should arrive today...my Kindle DX (the really big one) finally died after several years of heavy use and a new one is $389 - couldn't afford that. I gotta have a big screen because I read in large print. Regular print tires me out and I can no longer even read the tiny print in a lot of paperbacks (I physically can see/read it, but can't enjoy reading it for a half hour or hour as you do with a book).

Found a Toshiba Thrive 10.1" tablet for $199 (discontinued model) and snatched it up. It's not a super duper iPad killer thing, but all I want is to use it as a Kindle reader, play a few games and light web surfing. So for half the price of a new DX, I'm in. Can't wait.

How are you folks doing this fine day?

Good call on the tablet, it was exactly what I was thinking as I read through the post. Buying a Kindle these days just does not make sense with its locked down functionality. You can get much more bang for your buck with a lower end tablet as you discovered. You now though have all the funtionality of a full mobile OS. I never had a use for a tablet until my school went all e-texts to save students money. I picked up the Asus tf300t and have been very happy with it. Although it was a bit more then the Toshiba which is my 2nd fav. Brand for a mobile solution it also came with the ice cream sandwich android OS which I wanted to play with. Google released a version of Chrome for ice cream sandwich and so now I am in heaven! Anyway enough of the geekery..ill just say I hope to be as savy as you still in 20 years my dear

Let me know if you need any help getting more bang for your buck out of your toy. There are lots of possibilities with data sharing on the tablets. I access music, movies, and documents etx. Off of a file server from anywhere with wifi and it is not hard to setup. Weee Wednesday..off to troubleshoot Exchange server for a local church, good times!

Toshiba JUST made Ice Cream Sandwich available for the Thrive on Monday 8/6. I plan to upgrade as soon as mine arrives, as I doubt it will be already on there.

Note: I hate the Android names. Ice Cream Sandwich? Jelly Bean? Will I get carbs just by using them?

The one aspect of the Thrive I liked was the standard USB port and full-size SD card reader. I know it makes the thing a little bulkier, but it's about the same weight as my Kindle DX was, so that's what I'm used to anyway.

 I'm an Apple Fan Boy.

But I will say - I love the tablet computers.  I am on my 2nd iPad.  I use it for everything.  I know you will love it.

The MyFitnessPal App on the iPAd is awesome.  I like it even betterthan the full web interface.  I am sure the Android app is just as functional.  If you haven't installed it already its a must.

Is the tablet back lit like the iPad?

Up early for my run!  Feeling great.  Wishing my left eye would finish healing!  Yesterday was a bad sight day - but it will get progressiveley better over the rest of the week.  My right eye did the same thing.

Had a funny spill last night - realized that "Putting My Weight Behind It" doesn't mean what it did 155 lbs ago.  I have a steep hill in my back yard that I was mowing, and had gotten a little overgrown in the past couple of weeks.  I used to be able to plant my feet and be the immovable object.

Not the case anymore.  That hill was a little slick.  That lawn mower pulled me right down on my butt!.  The laws of Sir Isaac Newton are no longer mine to trifle with!

Yeah, I've noticed that as well. Physics do not favor the thin in these situations. Just remind yourself that the situations where heavier is better are in the minority and BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

Oh Definitely - I learned my lesson.  At least when I fell it was on a soft grassy hill and not in a parking lot or rocky slope.  I guess its a good idea to learn this in my own back yard than on one of my new hikes!

It made me think though - How often before did I use my weight and stomach as a tool?  I would prop things on it when moving large items, depend on my mass when trying to lever or move large items, so forth and so on.

Not that being heavy was a benefit!

But in addition to the other things like just walking differently, not turning sideways to go through doors or turn stiles, it makes me wonder what else is there thats waiting out there for me to discover?  What other unexpeted differences will I find between being heavy and being skinny?

I smell a new blog post coming on, LOL.

i have noticed that too. about a year ago l leaned over to pick up something while sitting in an office type chair on wheels. i tipped over and landed on my a$$. used to have a lot more to weigh down the chair but now i am not bottom heavy.

dr. c says people who lose weight with wls report feeling sort of off balance for a long time. you would think we would adjust.  learned my lesson about that chair. at least no none saw. diane

Seriously? WTH!? My money is on water weight again. I've upped the running this week so maybe it's extra water for the muscles to heal? Who knows.... I'm still in range, but I'm agitated by it.

Work, appointment with my advisor and then a date with the new boy. Should be a good day.
