I am almost two years out and I want to know why do you think people look down on  weight-loss surgery so much when I'm out and about and I tell people I have lost weight they asked me how depending on the Place I tell them the truth anyway the usual response I get is at least you didn't have weight loss surgery I feel my decision was the right one what are your thoughts???

I've not experienced that.  I am open about my surgery as well, and most people are congragulatory for doing what I needed to turn my life around.  The rest are non-commital but I don't read anything into that.

I will speak for ME...I haven't always had a warm fuzzy feeling about WLS.  I've never said but used to think...why can't they do it the "natural" way.  Of course NOW I realize seeking WLS is merely seeking help, like when I couldn't figure out a math problem that the teacher had gone over, I still needed to ask for help.

NOW I don't run into any problems because no one would DARE say anything to ME...but when someone did I asked how they got to work, the answer is of course "drive" so I replying pft take the easy way huh.  Next time you should walk.  SHUTS them up every time!

NO one does anything the "easy" way anymore or I'd be washing clothes in the tub, baking my own bread etc etc.

I've never got any of that....... I think I put it out so there is no room for it...... I would rip into a comment like that......

I actually get the exact opposite.....since I'm open about it.....After I've told people that know me....I've heard..... Wow... great... It had to be done (cause I was huge) or just general amazement and congratulations..... The best one was from someone I didn't even know....he over heard me talking to a sales clerk at the Camera Store..... He asked some questions..... Than asked me if I would talk to his mom who lived in another State !

There is no room in this process to have to put up with that crap......

I find the exact same thing. My highest weight ever was SMO, though I was "only" morbidly obese when I started this process last year. Since I was open about my decision, and folks who know me well had seen me struggle and fail the "hard" way, I just got huge support.

I think this is the biggest plus about being open from the beginning.

Highest weight: 335 lbs, BMI 50.9
Pre-op weight: 319 lbs, BMI 48.5
Current range: 140-144, BMI 21.3 - 22

175+ lbs lost, maintaining since February 2012

You can't please everyone and most people are uneducated about our battles and the reasoning behind our decision - and then there are just the "haters".  Let them think what they want - we know the truth!  I'm very open about it and my loved ones (both friends and family) applaud my courage and are all immensely supportive and proud of my accomplishments.  I don't really give a flip what other people (that I don't know) think, but I tell everyone - cuz if I can inspire anyone to better themself or improve their life, I'm gonna do it.  Ignore the "haters" and hold your head high!

You must permanently change your lifestyle if you want your weight loss to be permanent. You can do it!

I think it is because the way the media portrays it....you have articles all the time with headlines like "she lost weight without any gimmicks...no surgery..no medication"...then you have the publicized re-gain after WLS of some famous people...and most people just think it is the easy way out, and that the only "good" way to lose weight is the "natural" way...meaning healthy food and exercise.

There is a stigma that we have failed to be in control of our bodies and had to resort to mutilating our body in something drastically "unnatural"....meanwhile, there are many lifesaving surgeries that could be considered "unnatural"...

Honestly, I don't care at all anymore...and recently have been much more open about having had the surgery..I feel that more people should know the positive side of it and that I'm not ashamed of it at all..it saved my life and gave me a quality of life! And I still work darn hard...I exercise and do eat right!  But I needed the help! I tried all my life to keep the weight off and needed to get off that merry-go-round...my health was suffering, on all kinds of medications, all sorts of illness, and I was miserable....
