Anyone develop a sweet tooth AFTER surgery?

There was a lady in my support group meeting that said she has recently developed a craving for sweets.  She has always been a salt craver, so this is something new.

Dr Cirangle suggested maybe she had let more sugar into her diet recently without noticing (which she agreed may have happened) which was causing her cravings.  He suggested she cut out all sugar and see if the cravings abated.

I was the biggest sweet eater ever before surgery, and my tastes for that hasnt changed much. Except now i guess i'm just an artifical sweetner junkie...

I use protein shakes and SF syrups to cure my sweet tooth - win win since I get lots of protein but Double Stuff Cookie, and Mint Cookie shakes are blissful :)  My favorite SF syrup is strawberry though - i basically make a chocolate/strawberry/PB2 shake when i'm desperate.

I think this sweet tooth thing was how my whole iced coffee with SF vanilla addiction started.

Fortunately ice cream gives me heartburn, so I quit eating it after trying it a couple of times.  Food with sugar gives me heartburn and it's not worth eating when I have to take an antacid afterwards.

Yep. I tend to want both sweets and protein on days that I do heavy workouts like today. I wasn't so much a sweet eater as a salt eater pre-op.  Now, I use a lot more sweetner in coffee, etc..  My theory is that it's my body's reaction to eating a relatively low-carb diet while being pretty lean.  I don't have a lot of fat to burn, and protein and fat take longer to convert to blood suger and  glycogen than carbs -- particularly refined carbs.

When I eat things like Chili it seems to knock down the sweet craving probably by delivering protein and carbs that are relatively slow to convert to blood sugar (i.e., beans, fructose from the tomatoes, etc).

Sweets have been much more challenging for me post-op, too. It's funny, for the first year or so ice cream (my downfall) tasted revolting and would give me massive diarrhea. Sadly, that is no longer the case. I still can't eat more than 1/2 cup or so or I will get sick, but darn it, it's back to tasting yummy. Now what I do is allow myself a kid-size cone at the local ice cream shop when I take my kids there for a treat. It's very small and keeps me satisfied for a couple weeks.

Now if only I could tackle my popcorn addiction. Sigh.
