Post-workout protein?

Your muscles really do need protein after a strength training workout. Yes, you may use up some calories with a protein drink, but in the long run, your metabolic rate and ability to burn a few more calories will be higher with more muscle mass. After a strength workout, the metabolic burn continues for hours versus a cardio workout, where the calories burned may be greater while doing the activity, but the burn doesn't persist for several hours afterwards, like it does with strength training.

I drink 25-30g of protein within 30 minutes of my workout.  I generally will bring a protein coffee with me in a mug and keep it in the car.  It's also important to get some carbs so your body doesn't just break the protein down to replace your lost glycogen rather synthesizing the amino acids so they repair and build your muscles.
