Yeah he will be at goal soon.  Even the fierce Dr. C said he was doing really well in the weight loss progress in spite of this little bump in the road.

I predict he will blow past goal like you did, I did, and lots of others do.

Good to read he is doing well.  Was this a complication of the surgery that caused the hernia and the stretching of the stomach?  I didn't think the sleeves could really stretch??

Dr. says some people have a hiatal weakness that isn't detected during vsg surgery (even though they look for it) and that when you are real fat, your fat holds everything in place but things can slide once that fat is gone. I personally suspect that having a more narrow stomach enables that sliding too but thats not from the doctor.

Not sure about the stretching. It wasn't all that bad but Dr. fixed it since he was in there. I am wondering that since part of his sleeve was up above the diaphram (being what a hiatal hernia is) if that enabled things to stick there and stretch.

Hubby is better every day and I think this is going to be a very good thing.

I am so very glad to read he is ok and at home.  What a trooper.  I am going to be pefectly honest here DIane, your husband's situation rattled me a bit.  There were many possible side effects from surgery that I knew I was getting myself into, and thankfully never had to experience.  Acid, leaks, dehydration, fighting to get protein in, gas pain after surgery, etc.  I never had on my radar stretching and hernia complications resulting from this surgery.  I get that there is not exactly decades worth of information, but I was hopeful that the procedure was far enough out that patterns in long term complications would have begun to emerge.   I appreciate very, very much your sharing.  Now I know that if I start feeling funky or having unusual acid issues to chat with the doctor- I am not great about that normally.   Not that I am afraid to, but too many times I dismiss symptoms as not important enough to mention.  Thanks again.

thanks for your kind words. but please be clear that surgeon says the vsg did not cause this hiatal hernia. It may have already been there and been "revealed" by the loss of fat and change in stomach size. There are many things that can cause a hiatal hernia. Being obese and being over age 50 are two of them. hernias were listed as one of the possible side effects of vsg along with many other things.

my husband and i do not consider this a "complication" of the vsg. He is nearly 8 months out from the vsg surgery (and has lost well over 100 lbs since then).

I had a hiatal hernia repaired during vsg which we already knew was there. dr. looks for them but i guess they are not always obvious.

So hope this clarifies. vsg or not, unusual reflux or vomiting not explained by simple overeating should always be investigated. But no need to be rattled by his experience. As surgeries go, it was a pretty easy fix.
