Topic: The Sleeve is no longer considered a "Purely Restrictive Sugery" based on this...
I have an exaggerated reaction to eating carbs now. It does not seem as extreme to me as what dumping has been described as but it does make me a bit jittery and I am aware of a sugar high that was not there before surgery. I am curious what others will come back with on this one.
What about you, do you dump or have a stronger than normal reaction to carbs now?

I have never dumped but I have also never gone on a sugar bender. In fact I have eaten very little refined sugar since surgery. I do get an upset stomach though whenever I eat it even in small amounts. I just chalked it up to the fact my body is not used to it since I have not eaten it in a year. Just like anything else you dont eat for an extended period of time. If it is due to the surgery then it makes me even happier because I am an addict and can use all the help I can get haha. I though have a plication so I dont think if this is the case that it is due to the stomach actually being removed.
Hmmmmm
I have had a few very small serving carb treats since hitting maintenance and haven't had any problems but mostly I've avoided simple carbs because of the carb monster, not because of dumping.

I do have dumping type reactions to high sugar, high fat foods. Since I normally don't eat these foods, it's a rare occurence. I know that if I eat Coldstone's I will pay for it. I can eat anything, but I can't eat too much of the sweet foods. I also found that I am now having a reaction to one of my protein powders.
I have never dumped, mainly because I don't eat simple carbs by themselves. Usually, I try to have some protein along with any carbs that I eat. I have done this, to prevent RH or dumping syndrome.
Dumping syndrome or RH is very real with sleeve patients. Last year, after reading about some reactions that a few individuals experienced, when I had my one year follow-up, I asked the Bariatric Internist about it. She said that it was real, she had heard about it at a recent conference that she had attended, and she had personally medically diagnosed 3 cases of her own.
It may be due to increased gastric emptying, but even non-WLS folks can experience dumping if they eat too much sugar or fat. Over the years, I had experienced some dumping episodes, after eating too much sugar or fat.
Ironically, one of the reasons that I had the sleeve, was to avoid this reaction, but it can happen with sleeve folks, as well as with RNY. Just another reason to always eat protein first and to minimize intake of simple carbs. Also, another reason to eat every 3 hours and not go long periods of time without eating. Actually, the dietitian recommended that to me early on.

Never dumped--cast-iron stomach here. Ok small cast-iron stomach. But then like everyone else on here have mostly kept carbs under 30 since surgery and have gone gluten free for last 6 months too. I have an occasional corn tortilla shell, and some endangered species chocolate squares, but no dumping with those either.
Last year when I was maybe 2 months out I took a sip of my husbands SLURPEE it was too sweet and I felt nauseous afterwards. I don't really define this as dumping. I think it is common in people that have weaned off sugars. Even my husband gets a sick feeling from sodas now.
I left those drinks alone but I have had mini cupcakes and cookies on rare occasion with no reaction.
