But it's a healthy donut!!!!

It's national donut day today.  On the news this morning, the news reporters had a platter of what they called "healthy donut choices" for breakfast.  I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.  The donuts were fried, sugary, many had sprinkles and frosting.  What part of that equation is healthy???????

It reminded me of something my dear sweet size 3, 5 foot 10 inch mother in law said to me once.

My FIL and MIL wanted to take our family out to Krispy Kreme donuts back around 2008, before I was diagnosed with a wheat allergy.

The whole family was there, and everyone was pigging out on a variety of oily, sugar and flour laden badness, except for me, who was on a diet (as usual) sitting there in my 5 foot 4 inch frame, size 4x shirt and size 24 britches.  My skinny MIL was not happy that I wasn't eating any of the donuts, so she says to me "But it's a healthy donut, it's made with pumpkin".  Everyone burst out laughing, even my children.  My MIL, being of high metabolism and skinny her whole life despite eating mountains of food, had no clue why we were laughing.  About that time, my daughter (then 12 years old) tells grandma "there's no such thing as a healthy donut Grandma, it's made from white flour, sugar, then fried in oil."  Obviously, my daughter listens to me, and knew that donuts were not considered a "health food."  However, my MIL kept picking at me and insisted for several days that if you add a little pumpkin puree to a donut, it makes it a "healthy donut."

And no, I never gave in.  I stuck to my diet........

So on this day "National Donut Day" let's NOT eat a donut. We are not obligated to eat a donut, just because it was made into a Holiday.  And there is no such thing as a healthy donut!  After a very short mouth party, the donut will spike your blood sugar, clog your Arteries and immediately put a layer of fat on your backside.  So let's not give into the hype of "National Donut Day."

I am sorry, but only in America could there be a national donut day.  That is just amazing to me.

Yeah, they put a layer of fat on your frontside too. The worse kind--visceral fat--the one that causes all the diseases. Down with donuts, and I don't mean down the gullet! Who needs them anyway?

"Healthy Donuts?" Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Humm - I used to LOVE a HOT Shipleys donut - nothing better I thought.
Now, I cannot even stand to smell them.   The yeasty part still smells heavenly, but I cannot get past the grease they are fried in.

So funny how my perception and taste has changed - Love my VSG!!!

Good for you for standing your ground!!!

Oh great. National Donut Day. How about "National Eat YOurself into Diabetes and Hypertension Day"!!!!!

Lets turn National Donut Day into "National DO NOT"  day and boycot all places that sell them (ok we would only go there for coffee anyway).

funny story about the pumpkin donuts. Donuts have to be one of the worst things ever invented.

Thanks for all the great responses!!!!!

I hope I didn't trigger anyone.

If so, drink a donut flavored K-cup coffee?  K-cups work for me.  Then of course, a severe wheat allergy keeps me honest when it comes to all of the crappy junk food out there.  I simply cannot eat it, the result would be an epi-pen stick and a trip to the hosp via an ambulance.
