I had a tummy tuck with back lipo 4 months ago...ended up with a urinary cath. for 5 days.  Right after it came out..I had alot of blood in my urine.  (I know TMI..but it is part of the story..and we share it all here right??)....went to the doc....I didn't have a UTI and it went away....for awhile.  So since then,....every few weeks I have a few days of bright blood in my urine.  Always in contact with my doc and on top of it...but it is getting more frequent.  so went to a urologist this week..had a CT, etc...and I have kidney stones.  One is very large and "stuck" ....that is the one that is causing the problems..and needs to come out.  So I am having surgery this THursday...it is not a big deal..only need a long weekend off of work.  But he told me that people who have gastric surgeries are more prone to kidney stones.  I had not heard that..and I am a RN.  I know about the gallstones thing  (that happened to me 5 mo. post sleeve).  Anyone else heard of this.
The interesting thing is ..for several months after my plastic surgery..I kept having really bad back pain..totally thought it was the pain from my lipo.  Had to take the pain pills much longer than "normal"..and now I really think it was the kidney stone pain all along that I was blaming on the lipo!!  who would have thought...not me!
so after Thursday my stones will be gone!...and no more blood in urine for me...hopefully!

thanks for listening ....

Patty,

I'm sorry you have to have surgery, but I think it's preferable to passing the stone naturally--I have heard such horror stories about that! I wasn't aware of the link b/n kidney stones and WLS but I did a quick google search and saw one article that said that 8% of people have a kidney stone within two years of having a roux-en-y as opposed to 5% of the general population. The fact that 5% of the general poplulation have them surprised me!

Anyway, I'll be thinking about you and hoping for an easy surgery and super quick recovery!

I wonder, if it might have to do with the high protein diet that many of us consume? How many grams of protein have you been consuming, Patty? I think that is another important reason for drinking a lot of fluids. Also, I am thinking, perhaps it is related to the higher calcium that we take each day. What does your doc think that it is from? I know that some people are more prone to have them. There are also different type of stones and diet may be a factor in the type of stones that one develops.

Yes, I read that someplace.
I had a bad uti that reached my kidneys during my 6 month wait. So my typical over researching self went crazy on google. I think our high protein diet is a factor. You MUST stay on top of fluids, especially when it heats up.
I passed a stone before and the pain is just torture.

Good luck w your procedure.

So sorry you are having trouble, but congrats on the plastics!

Too much calcium carbonate can also contribute to kidney stones. That's one of the reasons calcium citrate is the preferred form for us VSGers. And why Tums and other supplements that have certain types of calcium in them can be unfavorable for long term use.

Anyhow, best wishes for a fast and painless procedure & recovery!

ouch, sorry you have to do this. i know someone who had this done recently and she said it was pretty easy so i hope it is for you.

DH has had kidney stones before his sleeve so he takes a little less calcium than doctor usually orders (doctor said to do this) and doctor also insists it be the citrate, not carbonate.

all the more reason to drink lots and lots of water and not the vitamin kinds that may have added calcium.

wishing you the best.

Hopefully, once this is over, you will be "normal" and healed and can enjoy your new body without a bunch of pesky stones lurking around every kidney. Good luck and God Speed!

Nothing terribly constructive to say except that I am sorry you are going through this and I hope Thursday is just a dim memory soon.  Take care.

Wow Patty, I'm so sorry you are going through this!  I had been wondering for quite some time if a lot of TT people experience the back pain that you have had.  It's good to know it's not from the TT, but at the same time, bad that it is kidney stones.  I feel so bad for you.  Kidney stones are no fun.  I wonder if passing a stone is as painful for a women as it is for a man?    I'm glad you don't have to pass this big one.  I'm glad your getting it surgically removed.  I'll be praying for you Patty.  I'm sure the surgery will go fine and you will be back in good shape quickly!

Owie Patty!  That makes so much sense now all the pain that you thought was lipo just didn't make sense. I'm so sorry about the surgery but so glad you'll be feeling better.

Im starting two weeks of vacation on Thursday so won't be able to make you chicken soup. :(. But I will send tons of good thoughts your way.
