Carb Requirements For Type 2 Diabetic VSGers
Do I understand correctly that many of you vets try to keep your carbs down to around 40g per day? Has that been true for you during weight loss AND maintenance?
If you had Type 2 diabetes prior to surgery, did you need to ingest a greater number of carbs during the day in order to avoid having low blood sugar?
If you DID have to have more daily carbs than others, did this affect your weight loss, or weight maintenance?
I think I am making myself a Boy Scout VSGer. You know their motto is, "Be Prepared". I am moving from wanting to control every aspect of my surgeon's involvement, to setting myself up on MyFitnessPal and making a comprehensive list of every possible thing I can or should eat, reveling in the fact that I can also have access to those food's carb, fat and protein value, as well as various food combination titles so I can instantly access said combinations.
I like to be well prepared in advance. Several years ago, my daughter and I had to evacuate ahead of Hurricanes Jeanne and Frances. As I was mentally cataloging what things I needed to store or take, I decided that one thing I didn't want to worry about was my daughter's bedroom whenever we returned.
The house was boarded up. Winds were starting to pick up a little and I wanted to control the future state of my daughter's bedroom.
Soooooo.......as a cautionary hurricane evacuation preparation measure......I made her vacuum her bedroom.
Well........it did make me feel better!
Thanks!
Anita

YOu are wise to plan ahead.
During weight loss i kept my carbs really low. surgeon said below 40 but i was often in the 20's. after reaching goal i am more like 50 to 70. its mainly from fruit, veggies and skim milk. i still avoid bread, rice, pasta and such. so far it works. i was not a diabetic but probably would have been pretty soon had i not done the surgery.

Anita, I was type 2 pre-sleeve and havent been on meds since the day before my surgery. I was not a super low carber during my WL phase but I did keep them below 50/60 and those came from milk, veggies & whole grains, most of the time.
I am hypoglycemic now (have been since about 4 months post-op). I generally eat between 80-100 gr of carbs and keep my protein between 100-150 gr per day. I really havent tracked the carbs much since hitting maintenance. I know for me I have to eat ever 2-3 hours during the day or I have a crash. I have not noticed any difference carbs make but I am very protein forward in my diet and I never eat carbs alone, well maybe occasionally but not very often.
Since I have learned to live the hypoglycemic life, things have been going great. I very rarily have a crash and if I do it is first thing in the morning when I wait too long to have a shake. Even having the low sugar issues, I have never regretted my sleeve!!
BTW, you wanna come vacuum my bedroom??

Hahaha, my poor daughter. I'll tell you another vacuuming story!
Her bedroom carpet was this beautiful plush emerald green. Any kind of light colored fluff would show up on it. One day, when I sent her back to re-vacuum it for the 2nd or 3rd time, she started crying. "You want me to get every single molecule", she sobbed!
I agreed with her! I told her that I could see little white things on the carpet without my glasses on, that she certainly could see those things and should vacuum them up.
Plus, I reiterated to her that one day, when she became an adult, she might have to earn extra money cleaning peoples houses and it was a good thing that I was teaching her how to do a good job!
Fast forward several years - My daughter is in college and needs extra money every now and then. Guess how she earns it! Yep! Other college students pay her to clean their places because she will clean to the nth degree!
