Cross-post: Walk/Run race with eFernandez and ACBbrown
Hey folks! If you'd like to see the story and photographs from the race I ran today along with eFernandez and ACBbrown, head on over to www.obesityhelp.com/forums/fitness/4529070/My-first-race-eve nt-with-OH-peps-ACBbrown-and-eFernandez/
Wow, Ruggie. Good for you for running a 5K.
I must have missed your posts on the couch to 5K....though I've noticed a number of people using it on the VSG forum over the past year or so.
I've thought of starting it...even printed the info off but never started it. Are you planning on running more races? Did you enjoy it enough to continue running?
You are an inspiration of what someone can do with themselves when they decide to make changes in their life. Go Ruggie..

Honestly - the race was a lot more enjoyable than I thought it would be! I guess there is a certain kind of energy and excitment that's just not there when I'm of running by myself. I thought that I'd do a 5K race once to have said I did it and conquered it - but now I'm actually thinking of looking for more!
Well to be honest, I was inspired by a lot of people in the Exercise Forum that talked about how they did the Couch-to-5K program and how great and "easy" it was for them - I think it's just a rolling wave of inspiration. Honestly, I found Mac Madame very inspirational, talking about running marathons, doing triathalons, jumping over the moon in a single bound....
But yes, to think a year ago I was 127 pounds heavier, would have been sleeping in late on a Sunday from all the beer and food I had the night before..... and yesterday I made my body propel itself with only its feet - to be honest, yesterday's race was a bit of a life changing event for me. I guess I count this as such a major thing because one of my 'justifications' to having WLS was to enable being physically active since I really wasn't most of my adult life.
Now that you've gotten me to think about it, here's my main timeline:
June 10, 2011 - Met Paul Cirangle for the first time, had consult, initially asking him about a lapband! He convinced me to explore the VSG option.
July 6, 2011 - VSG surgery
February 13, 2012 - Start my C25K program (Run #1)
March 9, 2012 - Hit my goal weight (which I'm now 6 pounds under)
April 8, 2012 - Finish my C25K program (Run #24)
May 6, 2012 - Run my first race (5K)
June 6, 2012 - Plastics scheduled
July 6, 2012 - My first 'surgiversary'
It seems too fast in a way -- but no complaints though :)

You've really had quite a year...or almost a year. Big changes in such a short period. You have done so well, you are an inspiration.
I'm closing in on my original surgery date of June 9th. I had to delay because of another medical condition, so I'm 20 month post VSG surgery now. I have to say that after about 17 or 18 months, I have settled into a clear food plan. I've given up even tasting sweets and fatty foods and stick with lean chicken and vegetables with a serving of fruit.
For awhile, I was allowing some foods into my life that are not necessary to eat. And I had gained 6 lbs from my lowest weight. I've lost 2 of those and plan on losing a few more....maybe getting my butt in gear and running will help.
I think we go through phases...the first one after we hit maintenance is when we are afraid to gain anything. Then as we see how that works, we loosen the grip a little and here is where a few lbs creep up. Then we figure out that gaining weight is not what we want, and tighten the food plan. some people keep going and really regain here. But being thin is more important to me than eating stuff that is not good for us. I have been very careful about what I eat, but little snacks here and there were slipping into my life. And for me, there was no need for it.
I'm heading off to Alaska for 2 weeks and plan on walking a lot while on the trip. I should return home about the same weight....Then maybe I'll start the couch to 5K....
