Low D levels

I don't post often, never did more of a "lurker".  It's been 21 months and I am maintaining.  I had a physical and was told my D levels are extremely low.  My primary care physician said not to be alarmed but to begin with 1,000 IU a day.  Has anyone else has this problem? Any suggestions?

Yep. It's not uncommon. Supposedly large percentages of the US population, especially in the North is vitamin D deficient.

I take 1000 IU a day, but mine weren't "extremely low" just a little low. Maybe take 2000 IU a day for a while until they nomalize, then drop back.

Vitamin D supplements are very affordable and easy to take.

Low vit D levels are not uncommon at all. My first post-op labs said my level was 7. My Nut said a dead persom had more vit D than I did. Great! I started out taking 10,000 IU per day (2X5,000 IU per day) for about 3 months. Once my levels were within the normal range I backed off to 5,000 every other day. During the winter months I take 5,000 per day then back to 5,000 every other day during the summer. So far my levels look really good.

I was so low i was in Charles dickens country (you know like rickets low) pre surgery.  My surgeon gave me a prescription for 8,000 a week i think for 8 weeks.  After surgery i started on 5,000 a day and i still do that.  My last check up was good in the range but there is a lot of talk about being in the range still not high enough for optimum. So I continue to do 5,000 and hold. It certainly made a difference to my overall feeling of well being.

Hello there.  Not sure what your # is but just an fyi....research has shown that we need our vit d level to be at least 80 to reduce risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, and certain cancers.

My last lab was @45.  I'm now taking about 5,000 IU/per day to get up to an optimal level.

Best of luck to you........Jennifer
