Some Rambling Thoughts

Last night my DH and I went to a catered auction.  We sat at a table of 8 where we did not know the other couples.  Dinner was served and we each got a plate with TONS of food.  There was a chicken breast with a sauce on the top, about 4 ounces of really tender beef, again with some type of gravy on top.  A pile of risoto and veggies.  Of course my small tummy made it look like I hadn't touched a thing, however, it was sooo good that I didn't want it to go to waste.  My DH discreetly asked the caterer if we could have a doggy bag.  She brought me a container and I told her how good the food was but that I just couldn't eat it all and didn't want it to go to waste.  No problems on that front, however, this older man at our table was SHOCKED that I was taking the rest of my food home.  He was almost incensed.  I've never had this happen before and I know I turned a bright red.  I tried to explain that I didn't want the food to go to waste and that this would be my lunch for the next day (it really will last me for about 4 meals).  He wasn't going to let it go but his wife gave him that "look."

One thing I noticed is that everyone else at our table cleaned their plate!  It sickens me to think that BS (before surgery) I would have cleaned my plate too, but not anymore. I can't believe how much food I used to cram in.  I am so thankful for my smaller tummy and smaller body.  Life is definitely better!

Interesting story. Don't know why anybody would have a cow about you taking food home. Bet he was drinking.

Just got home from dinner at a fancy restaurant with a group of friends and my also sleeved dh. Hubby ordered lentil soup off the appetizer menu and I ordered an appetizer which was an egg, crab meat and local goat cheese. The restaurant was very accomodating and brought them as entree and we tipped the waitress big. It was DH first fancy restaurant since surgery and it went well.

Your story shows how important the bad or good behavior of others can make this road easier or harder. But for every jerk like you met there are understanding friends to cherish.   Diane

Weirdo.  Geez.  But good for you for going ahead with your plan.

But mostly I wanted to reply to your post because I have the same feelings of sick when I watch friends shove mounds of food down their gullets and realize I used to do the same.  It really disgusts me to watch some of my friends eat.  Honestly, when did we Americans get to the point that enough food to fill a dishpan is considered a normal sized meal???  I didn't grow up eating like that.  A small serving of meat, a green vegetable, a small salad, and a small dessert was a normal, very satisfying meal.  And as long as I ate like that, growing up and all through college, I was a pretty normal weight.  It wasn't until I was out on my own, having to cook for myself and was too lazy to put any effort into food prep, that I started eating mounds of crap food.  And we all know the rest of that story.

Maybe the wierdo was was on a diet and felt guilty for having eaten his entire plate and wished he had done what you did?  And in his regretful anger, took it out on you. Anyway people should mind their own business.   :)

I go to book club every month and we take turns hosting a dinner.  I eat my tiny portion, try to taste everything and try not to notice when others clear their plates.

I know that I use to clear my plate and would wonder, "would it be rude to ask for seconds?"

Now I am sure to always compliment the food (because I eat so little it looks like I didn't like it.  You understand.)!

I say all of this wearing a size 4 and being 5 foot 8 and a 1/2.  Got to love it!!!  Who would of imagined it?  Not me.

rude, very rude. I guess I would have had to ask him why in the world he thought it was ANY of his business, very politely and with big ole southern eyes batting...and say something like" Oh ,sweetie were you wanting to take this food home yourself?"
Southern women have a way of making people feel like the fools that they are and still be as sweet,as,well, sweet tea,lol.. No way would I have let him make me feel foolish ,embarrased or in the wrong.

An interesting thing I've noticed... When I was still a size 16 and it barely looked like I touched my meal, the waitress always assumed something was wrong with the food.  At a size 6, they just ask me if I want a box.  Makes me think that all the thin women must not finish their plates and take some home  (probably why they're all thin, lol).

I'm always too worried about how little I'm eating and feeling self conscious to worry about or notice how much anybody else is eating. Talk about self absorbed.. LOL.

So weird....but it was your plate of food to do with it however you want...I'm assuming you paid a good amount since it was a charity thing...

My guess is that culturally it was rude in his opinion for whatever reason....I do know that I had a French exchange student live with us years ago, and she explained that there was no taking doggie bags home from a restaurant where she lived, that would be horribly rude and not something done. She also had never eaten with her hands before! She tried to cut her corn on the cob and eat the kernels that fell with a fork, it was hilarious!

I agree, I like that I can only eat small portions and am satisfied on so little! Sometimes when something is very tasty, I wish I could eat more, but most of the time, it is a great relief to just eat a few bites of something...
