I ditched the gym membership too.  Would go for awhile, then stop over something really small (like it's cold and I don't want to drive there in a cold car or whatever), and then do nothing.  I have some basic workout equipment in my basement.  An old treadmill, several videos, a yoga mat, a few hand weights.  That seems to work better than anything, although there are times when the stuff collects dust.  But it was a small investment for convenience and works for me.  I'm really lucky, too, that my workplace offers free zumba, core and yoga classes.  If I'm in the office, I go.  If I travel, well, can't obviously.

Anyhow, I have really switched from quantity (I was a volume eater) to quality.  If it doesn't taste good, I stop after the first bite.  Just not worth it when I can only eat ten bites in a sitting.

I'm carb sensitive and I'm ok with that.  I feel tons better when I avoid the carbs.

I'm seeing a lot of newbies pushing the limits early... eating carbs early... some with the excuse that "I'm still losing weight!" or "I feel fine!" or what have you.  I try to gently warn them that it's all good right now when honeymoon weight loss is easy and that it's gonna get hard later... because I LISTENED to the vets... and many of the newbies aren't listening right now.  Frustrating.  The same cycle I saw many of you go through since my time here.  Anyhow, I'm still on the tail end of honeymoon, plus I haven't pushed many of those limits... tried to use the past 8 months to build good habits for the future... so I can't speak from personal experience about the "getting harder later" part... but I'm not willing to risk it.  Too much is at stake here.

Rambling over... just totally feeling that middle-grounder syndrome here.  Not a newbie, not a vet, starting to feel like I understand a few things but still lots of learning left.  And felt compelled to comment.

Thanks for your bath tub insights!

hi Frisco. glad that theory/practice has worked for you! it has been a few years so it obviously DOES work, your track record proves it.
i think i eat sort of different, but overall feel like 'balance ' is still the core. that and learning a new relationship with food and my body.
i confess i eat a lot of protein shakes. i like them. they taste really good and make me feel really good and are so convenient. i work and don't have time for a lot of cooking.
i stop at whole foods and spend around 2 or maybe 3 bucks at a time at the food bar, lean meat, sparing carbs, and some fresh greens.
the protein shakes are so yummy! i use premier protein and blend frozen fruit in. the texture is just like a 'real' milk shake. my new favorite is vanilla with frozen pineapple and a bit of skinny girl pina colada rum mix. MMM.
i think the way you live, for me the hardest part might be the social challenge, or it sounds like it would pose a social challenge-? how does eating out with friends or going to social events work out?
an ala cart taco or some other sort of thing is a perfect size for me when eating out, but i think that is more than you say you eat. i do allow myself times of splurging though. it has not seemed to do any permanent damage, at least so far. it is about lifestyle, is how i see that...but i know that would be counterproductive to your strict attempt to protect your small sleeve. i CAN shovel food down, but i can also eat very moderate and be satisfied. for me i think the key is stabilizing my blood sugar, i find i am very carb sensitive. THAT, more than quantity management, is my battle if i want long term success.
more power to you Frisco...
