Donating Blood

Has anyone donated blood since surgery?  I'm most worried about not having enough calories in to keep me from passing out.  How was your experience?

If you're worried about passing out, make sure that you eat before you go to have your blood drawn. They also give you juice and something to eat after your blood is drawn. Main thing, is to eat before you go.

I was told not to donate blood anymore because it takes too long to recoup it, given how little we eat now.  Maybe my center is overly cautious?

when i was about 6 or 8 months out my doctor told me its. ok.   you are so recent that i would wait until your surgeon says its ok. not a good time to lose fluid and you don't want to be eating the cookies and sweets they usually give you afterwards .  Diane

I did it. Nothing bad happened that I know of. I did end up in the ER the next day but I was passing a kidney stone so I don't think it's remotely related.

I haven't done it since because I am always getting ready for a race and don't want to take the hit to performance.

Since I'm not really working out right now due to injury, maybe it's a good time to sign up!

I have done it a couple times and passed out once.  It was hours after I had given and not sure if it was related or not.  I say check with your Dr. and eat first for sure.

I started donating again when I was a little over a year out from surgery.  Donated at least 3 times in the past year and have had no problems..just make sure you eat something before going and stay hydrated.  It only took 7 minutes when I donated a few weeks ago, much faster then before surgery!
