Struggling badly with not losing and snacking
RNY on 01/06/15
I get frustrated because i am working with a personal trainer, doing strength to build muscle and eating right logging food, etc then i still maintain when i have so much left to lose. I have been off track pretty badly as far as snacking since Thanksgiving.. I need a good swift kick in the butt but also some good ideas.. I also need to be posting here every day and making myself accountable..
PLEASE any advice you can give about starting over and how would be helpful.. I thought about going back to liquid for awhile but don't know what i would accomplish with it? thank you

I am by far not a vet, or in maintenance... but toying with the idea. I'm working on the last 20-30 lbs.
I found myself getting off track too with all the holiday goodies and perpetual one big birthday party december is in my family (5 birthdays from thanksgiving to new years---one every week). Yesterday, I decided I was going to get myself back on track and started recording every bite I put in my mouth again... that really curtailed my snacking... because if I knew I ate it, I would have to write it down. I also began measuring my portions again... like I did when I was first post op. I didn't quite realized I was eating so much until I began measuring again.

I have been where you are, just last holiday season. I find that getting my mindset right is like getting a cart rolling. It's really hard to get the cart moving, but once it's in motion, it easier to keep it going. That's how staying on track works for me. This season I decided that I was not going to repeat mistakes of Christmas past. I kicked up my journalling, kept up with my exercise and actually lost weight before the holiday season. Today I weighed .4 lbs more than I did the day before Christmas, not too bad!
When the holiday season ended last year, I struggled with cutting out the night time snacking the most. I switched out the bad "lead me to hell" snacks with sugar free jello or Breakstone Cottage Doubles. I made myself get back to the gym. SLOWLY, things started to get back to where I wanted. I do go off plan, but I keep an eye on it so that it is limited to a couple of days and not a couple of weeks or months.
I don't believe on doing the liquid diets. I do believe in adding in protein drinks though. It helps me feel satisfied longer, so I am less temped to snack, plus it helps me meet my protein quota.
My advice to you is what Nike says, "Just do it." Everyday it will become easier and soon enough it will become a habit. I'm almost as far out as you, and I still have great restriction with the right foods. The trick is avoiding all the wrong ones!
Good luck!

Scroll back through older posts in this group as there are many many examples of people who have gotten off track and lots of great advice has been offered. Reading all this stuff will help motivate you.
You could do the liquid diet for one day just to make a break with your habits. Write down what a day of eating will be under your new program so you can visualize and plan what you will do. Have appropriate planned snacks like string cheese, a sugar free pudding or whatever planned. Consider making one meal a day a protein drink.
Be sure to start journaling food if you have stopped. Go back to old journals and see what you were eating when you were losing before and follow that.
The further out from surgery you get the easier it is to eat more so opt for dense protein whenever possible.
make a list of other stuff to do when you feel like nibbling. often its boredom. I play on line scrabble and ipad games which keeps hands busy. some people do needlework or put together jig saw puzzles.
If you are eating much in the way of carbs, cut those out and keep to under 40 carbs per day with them coming from vegetables, fruits and nonfat dairy. I swear eating carbs makes you crave more food - at least it does for me.
good luck. you can do this. Diane

I talk a lot about how I was eating way more than I burned thinking I was hungry when I wasn't. Maybe some of my issues (not drinking enoug, boredom eating, habit eating) will sound familar to you.

Thank you MacMadame...that was a great blog! I needed to read it! I too have been struggling with the holidays this year and gained a few lbs. I am getting back on track now but it was great to read this.
I made a bunch of homemade granola (very yummy) for christmas gifts this year...but I found myself eating it...no more granola for me! That stuff is too addicting and too high calories!
