Hypoglycemia?

Has anyone else developed hypoglycemia after surgery? I have been struggling with very low blood sugars for the past month (39 was the lowest). I have had a few episodes in the past so I already stay away from fruit and carbs.

Saw my docs yesterday and I know I have to eat more often. I was wondering if anyone else had similar issues and whether you were able to stabilize your blood sugars?

Thanks!!

I too am hypoglycemic. It took me a while to actually figure out what was wrong but now that I know it is much easier to manage. My lowest was 53 and cannot even imagine 39. That is scary low!!

My best advice is to stay on top of your food intake. I eat every 2-3 hours and I will have something carby before a work out. Everyday I drink a protein shake within an hour of waking up so I dont crash before I get to work. I know it is hard to remember to eat since I have no hunger but now that I know I have these issues I make sure I eat something even if it's a cheese stick.

I do eat whole grain and fruits in moderation. I try to eat a well balanced diet but I am not a veggie lover. Keep a close eye on your blood sugars and get on an eating schedule. Mine has stabilized but I have learned what to do to keep them regulated. You will be able to figure this out. Good Luck!!!

I have hypoglycemia, but I had it before surgery too.  It has definitely gotten worse after surgery.  My NUT explained that the larger volume of food that I was able to eat before helped to keep crashes at bay.

I've learned to avoid sugars, and I make sure that my Greek yogurt has a little fat in it.  My NUT also explained that fats help keep sugar levels stable.  It's all a learning experience of what works, but I definitely try to have protein at each small meal that I eat.  I eat about every 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

So far I haven't bought a meter to get exact readings, but I listen to my body to know what does and does not work.
