meeting a maintenance goal

So I just realized I met a maintenane goal a couple of weeks ago. The goal was to weigh under 125 on December 12 which is a year after reaching my low weight and 15 months after reaching surgeon's goal.

In my start page goal section I have been setting this goal every 6 months to maintain in this range and so far so good. It goes with the concept of maintenace not being all that different from weight loss phase except daily calories are more. But I still have to eat mindfully, keep protein up and carbs low, journal and count calories. Setting these periodic goals helps me do this.

Anyway, thats my brag du jour.  Hope everybody else has some things to celebrate.  Diane

You have earned bragging rights Diane! Way to go! I have a question--I am about 30 pounds from my own personal goal. But my question is this--do you long-term successful VSGers still drink 64 ounces of water a day? I suppose you do since you are still pushing the protein. If there was just one rule I would hope to be able to ditch in maintenance it is the drowning yourself in water every day. If you do "mindful eating" every day, I think my burden will become "mindful drinking."--ugh. Please do tell--thank you.

i gotta admit i don't get in 64 oz fluid every day. I was never very good at this one. and I live in a cool moist climate so i don't get terribly thirsty. My surgeon says we should do this forever and i believe its a good thing but something i haven't done so well at. lets both try to do better at this. I find i do better with iced tea than plain water.  Diane

There actually no scientic evidence to support the recommendation to get 64 oz. of water a day.

For most people, a quart of fluid is a minimum requirement and we can get most of that from food. But for other people (like me) 64 oz. is not nearly enough!

That's why the best recommendation is go by your pee color. It needs to be pale yellow like lemonade or even lighter. If yours is, then don't sweat it. (Pun intended.)

I have to get more like 80-100 oz a day though. I'm not sure why but if I get less, I get constipated and my pee gets too concentrated. Oh and my blood pressure goes up.

To be quite honest, everyone should be drinking 64 ounces of water/day. It helps us to stay hydrated and to wash toxins from our bodies. Also, since we eat mostly protein and most likely, don't consume fruits and veggies in normal amounts, we need tha****er to flush toxins from our bodies. If one is exercising frequently and sweating, then more water is lost through perspiration and water intake needs to be at least 64 ounces/day. Water, herbal teas, etc also help to curb hunger.

I am one of the lucky ones, I have always been able to drink enough water, except when I was early postop.

This is one rule that you cannot "ditch." Water is vital to our good health.

Good idea to set 6 month goals.  After the holidays, I need to get back on track.  I've gained 2 pounds and I don't like it!  That said, I'm not staying out of the goodies too well.  But exercising like a mad woman to make up the difference!  Next week - detox!

Some people might not support my WLS decision.
Those people remind me of slinkys. Not good for much but it would would bring a smile to my face if someone pushed them down the stairs.

Congratulations on maintaining your goal. I hope that I can say the same thing at my two year mark. I have been maintaining within a 2 lb range since mid-April, so I have a good foundation started. I also, keep my protein up, log my food, keep within a specific caloric range, and exercise 4-6 times/week. Performing these activities help one to remain mindful and are important for weight maintenance.

Thank you for your insight and sharing your success.

Congratulation Diane.  It has been very inspirational for me to watch your journey.  You always have great things to say. Thank you for that.

My body was pretty much in maintenance with a two pound range for several months.  It appears that I'm ready to shed a bit more now that I'm two weeks out from plastics.  It will be interesting to see where I am in three months once the swelling is down and things stop fluctuating so much.

Great post Diane !

Congrats on maintaining !

My maintenance eating is very similar to my WL eating also......I kept the portions about the same....

Added a few more veggies......fruit here and there.....and I use full fat on most things. I don't normally eat rice, bread or pasta.....but I will use flour, corn starch and bread crumbs lightly for cooking.
