Thanksgiving-On the Edge !

Sooo....Thankgiving......

Me...the guy that tells everyone to under eat your sleeves capacity......

Went right up to the edge !!!!

I swear....a half more bite and I would have been into full blown foamies.......

I noshed on a few celery sticks dipped in clam dip.....a little salami and cheese....was all good....

About an hour later....dinner....

There before me.....my protein choices.....Turkey, Ham and Braised Short Ribs.....

I asked my cousin the Chef......"If you were to have just 3oz. which would you have?"

He said...... "The Short Ribs" they came out good !

Well in my case it was a short rib......the smallest one I could fish out...it was actually one that had fallen apart....I examined it carfully....I'm pretty good at the visual now....I do it several times a day and back up my estimations with a scale.....this was more than 2oz. by weight......no way on earth it was 4oz. I was thinking a little less than 3oz. and it was soft and wet..... "Fork Tender" I was all good....even spooned a little more sauce on it.......

Man was it good !!! I ate slow and savored the flavors..... Ate slow and slower towards the end....it was all good....but I did realize it was a little more than normal for me.....and I did eat celery and salami an hour before....

I was right there.....burped (quietly to myself) a few times.....starting to wonder if I went over.....thinking "oh no....here come the foamies" felt the food not moving and kinda full in my esophagus.....took a few deep breathes and walked......had a gurgle in my throat......Now I'm thinking "Oh ****I did it!"

Well, full on foamies never came......I would call it the most mildest case of foamie you can get just cause of the gurgle.....

I truly was right there ....on the edge!!!

I wanted to try the sauce over rice.....so I brought some home. And a cookie.....ah...the cookie was another story......not legal in most states.....think thin like Pepperige Farm "Brussels" and Almond Roca buttery toffee.....and dark chocolate....

So all in all....no harm no foul.....stayed within my daily numbers.....just flew a little to close to the sun !!!

I hear ya, Frisco.  Some friends took me out with them to a Thanksgiving buffet.  Over the course of an hour, I had a couple of bites of the best ham ever, a couple of bites of the best short ribs ever, a couple of bites of the best squash casserole, a couple of bites of dressing / stuffing (stuffing being the better word, considering how my sleeve was feeling by that time), and a couple of bites of yummy salad.

Uuuuuhhhh.  Sleeve is screaming, I keep trying to sit up straighter to relieve the discomfort....

And then I had to have a brownie, the best one EVER!!

No foamies, but I was gastronomically miserable for a couple of hours.

I sure enjoyed the grub, though

Ah yes, the foamies.  Happened to me!  Thing is, dinner was late - waiting on late comers.  So I noshed on 2 mini-pumpkin muffins.  Meal time.  I took about 1/2 oz ham, 2 bites of corn casserole, 3 bites of dressing, 3 bites of mashed potatoes with ham gravy.  People are looking at my plate and I know they are thinking "Is THAT all she's eating!?"

It's a good thing we had record warm temperatures, because I went outside and walked around.  Very uncomfortable.  Thinking maybe I didn't chew my ham well enough.  Because I left most everything on my plate.  But the foamies came.  Felt relief.  No one missed me, as they were all going back for 2nds and 3rds.  I didn't even finish my firsts!

Still loving my sleeve.  But there are times I wish I didn't have the restriction.  No, I take that back.  I'm thankful for my restriction.  I'm just a slow learner.  I could have eaten more had I chewed my ham more carefully.  My own fault.  *sigh*

Those people remind me of slinkys. Not good for much but it would would bring a smile to my face if someone pushed them down the stairs.

OK, if we are being honest here, here goes.  I outdid everyone here.  Me, the queen of taking it slow, making good choices and eating mindfully.  Well, not so much this time.  I started with about  .5 ounce of Brie cheese, followed by home made chopped liver on a small piece of bread and a few crackers with hummus.  This was followed about an hour later with ham, sweet potato mash, cauliflower casserole, and a piece of turkey.  I have no idea how I ate all of that, but no foamies.  I then proceeded to have a 1/2 piece of my mom's amazing cake.  I have now managed to put back any and all the weight I have lost while I was sick.  I woke up this morning to a slightly alarming 105.4 on the scale.  I don't feel like I need to diet, but I need to go back to eating as usual.  The good news is that I am confident that I can manage this and all will be fine.

I can't believe it, but I actually lost weight over the holiday, which proves to me two things:

1. When the weight is READY to come off, it comes off

2. "over eating" is a whole new thing now.

The last couple months I have been losing just a pound or maybe two a month -- lose a pound slowly over a week's time, and then gain half of it back and fight to re-lose that one for the rest of the month, until losing another couple pounds and do it all over again, for a month end total of 2 pounds lost....I was on schedule to lose the pound, and did !

I ate what I would usually early on Thanksgiving morning and afternoon, then had turkey with homemade gravy, couple tablespoons of whipped yams, 6 fresh green beans, homemade cranberry relish. Later on ate the apples out of a homemmade apple pie and did have a bit of vanilla icecream with it.(1/4 of a cup ?) No foamies, just good food and good company.

I watched as everyone else was cramming their plates.  Then I selected a few moist looking pieces of the turkey, and settled in to eat that first.  So fortunately, the turkey made me hit the wall as far as filling me up.  No room in the inn, if you get my drift.  I actually under ate on Thanksgiving day.  Now yesterday and today, well, I keep picking at that darned pumpkin pie!   Weight is stable at 125.

Well I did this too. Not so much on Thanksgiving but with the repeat dinner of leftovers yesterday. I made the turkey and stuffing and all that stuff but told family if they wanted potatoes and dessert they had to bring it which they did.

So yesterday I ate a proper serving of turkey first and then started on a modest helping of stuffing with gravey on it (my favorite). About halfway through that serving I knew I had overdone it. Got just the slightest case of the slimies and was uncomfortable. Had to walk away. A couple of hours later I finished the stuff. Kept within my calorie guides and such. Gonna get rid of those leftovers.

Poor hubby with his nine day old sleeve sat at the table and had a protein drink doctored up with pumpkin pie spice.  He is doing really well. I am going to freeze some of the turkey so in a few weeks he can have a bit of it.

I gotta admit if good old sleeve hadn't kicked in, I might have eaten a lot more stuffing and gravey. So I am "thankful" that at two years there is plenty of restriction.

But the best part is that I don't even care that I didn't eat mashed potatoes or pumpkin pie. I don't mourn it. Life is definitley better slim.

This is beginning to sound like the Thanksgiving confessional!
So here goes:

We went to a friends and family potluck dinner at our friends mexican restaurant (the restaurant is closed to the public on Thanksgiving). There were 4 turkeys each roasted differently. I couldn't eat the mole because of my peanut allergy, but my fav was cooked in tomatoes and red chilis, YUM. There was every side dish one could imagine and desserts galore. The stuffing had chilis and dried cranberries and the gravy was delightful with a little hint of chipotle. Don't get me started about the mashed red potatoes!

I thought I was doing okay and had stopped eating (more like tasting) but about 20 minutes later I got that really full feeling and very near to the foamies. Boy was I uncomfortable for about an hour, but it did finally subside. I was so thirsty and couldn't even get any water down for about another hour.

I will have to say my sleeve kept me from eating way too much but I still tasted most everything I wanted to. I even enjoyed a couple of bites of my daughters chocolate pumpkin cheesecake that was topped with salted caramel and roasted pecans.

I am very happy to say I weighed in this morning at 123.2.

Happy Holidays everyone!
Lynda

Ah, dear Icarus and his bravado....
Frisco, you survived where others have not! LOL!

"If we burn our wings
flying to close to the sun
if the moment of glory
Is over before it's begun
If the dream is won --
Though everything is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost

When the dust has cleared
And victory denied
A summit too lofty
River a little too wide
If we keep our pride
Though paradise is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost

And if the music stops
There's only the sound of the rain
All the hope and glory,
All the sacrifice in vain
And if love remains
Though everything is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost" - Bravado by Neil Peart (of Rush)

I actually dropped to 167 for the first time this morning after a weekend of eating some things I wouldn't normally touch. I made sure I had a lot of protein all weekend! I have finally recognised group gatherings as a danger zone for me. I get to talking and not paying attention, and before I know it, I'm in trouble!
The past couple social occassions I really paid attention to what I put on my plate and to be concious of every bite. Thanksgiving dinner went great and I never got to a bad full feeling. We won't talk about the pumpkin pie I ate or the half roll I had with dinner! LOL!
