I've lost an entire Diane!

So Diane has her two year anniversary post over on the main VSG board and as I was commenting in that thread it hit me: as of yesterday morning, I had lost an entire Diane.

Weird.

What's weirder is that despite the fact that I've been carrying this weight for years, I could probably not carry Diane far at all. How did my body manage?

Highest weight: 335 lbs, BMI 50.9
Pre-op weight: 319 lbs, BMI 48.5
Current range: 140-144, BMI 21.3 - 22

175+ lbs lost, maintaining since February 2012

You are tooo funny!!!

I have thought about the fact that I could not carry the weight I've lost either.  How did our bodies do it?

It doesn't hurt my knees to walk up steps anymore, and I do not need frequent rests while making my way up them.  I wonder if I could get up the stairs if I were to put a couple of 40 pound bags of deer corn in a large pack frame and tried to climb up the stairs?  I wonder if it would feel the way it did when I was at my heaviest?

I buy cat litter in in big 42 lb bags from Costco sometimes. It's all I can do to carry one of those bags. No way I could carry two.

I've lost almost 3.

Scary. My poor body. I never thought of things in those terms before, but it's a wonder my body put up with it.

I also buy the 42 lbs of cat litter at Costco. I couldn't lift two at one time, which is less than the 100 lbs that I have lost. No wonder, I was so tired all the time. One day, I bought two bags and someone asked me, if I had placed the bags on my cart by myself, and when I said, "yes" he looked at me in amazement. I had to chuckle to myself on that one.

Congratulations on losing Diane!  :)

I hear you about carrying the weight.  At WW there's always a drive to bring in food to equal what you've lost.  Earlier this year I had the leader put 4-20 pound sacks of rice on my lap.  OMG, it was so heavy and I couldn't stand up.  Now I'd have to add another sack.  Holy Moly!!

Yeah, but I LIKE Diane. She seems like a very nice person.

Maybe I should think of it in terms of cat litter as above. I hate cat litter - don't mind losing that!

This is why we lose lean mass along with fat and part of the reason we burn fewer calories as we get smaller.  Even if you work at it,  you can't change the fact you're not lugging around an extra 100+lbs 24/7. It takes substantial muscles to haul that much extra weight around.  I was doing planks at the gym with my trainer last night, and I mentioned to him that it's  a heck of a lot easier at 145 than it was even at 210 when I started with him.   There's just less of me to hold up.  I'm far stronger RELATIVE to my mass than I was previously but not so much in absolute terms.  It was very frustrating to me for a while.  It's only in the last couple of months where my weightloss has started to slow somewhat that I'm seeing gains in absolute terms.

My body composition testing shows that of the 140+lbs I've lost, 10lbs or so is lean mass -- despite the fact I exercise, do strength training, etc.

It is almost impossible to lose the amount of weight that we have, without losing some lean muscle mass. We also lose bone mass, as my recent bone density scan showed.

When I started at the gym one year ago, I couldn't do one sit-up or push-up, much less hold a plank for any length of time. Now, the difference is night and day. I am much stronger relative to my mass. Luckily, the weight training has helped me to retain more muscle mass and actually build some. My body fat is in the low range for my age, which pleases me. I don't know what my lean body mass was, when I started, but I know that I lost a lot during the rapid weight loss phase, before I started the weight training.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. And just another reason why strength training is so important...now if I could just make myself start doing some so I can reap all those benefits I keep reading about!!

I think of things like this all the time.

I always think of my suitcase when I'm traveling because I am always that person praying that my luggage doesn't go over 50 lbs. Very frequently, the scale teeters on 49.9 when I set my suitcase on that scale.

So, I always imagine strapping 2.5 of those on my back and walking around. I definitely couldn't do it, so I have no idea how I did it then. It makes me so thankful to be rid of all that excess weight.
