Clear Protein?
Anybody know of a clear liquid item that has protein? Hubby has to be on clear liquids for two days before surgery and he wants to know if there is anything with protein as he wants to avoid the sugar of stuff like apple juice. Not sure if protein bullets count as clear. He has a question into the dietician but I thought I would toss this one out to y'all. I had to do only one day of clears before surgery and just had chicken broth and apple juice but hubby really wants to avoid the sugar. Diane
Isopure? Any red colored fluids are not recommended.
Are protein containing drinks okay with the program? Could always add unflavored protein to broth, clear soups, etc. Just make sure that it is okay with the program. Usually, they want clear fluids to decrease any residue in the intestinal tract.

for my pre op clears was anything that i could see through, and again it was not allowed to be red but it also included jello..
so i bought the isopure some tastes better than others... so yes even the protein bullets as long as they are not red would be ok..

How about strained Egg Drop Soup? I drank lots of that right before surgery and my first couple weeks following.

Before my surgery I made homemade chicken broth -- I used boneless skinless chicken and alot of it. I added a whole onion, (not cut up) half a dozen whole garlic cloves, a few carrots, a turnip, a couple parsnips and at the end of a couple hours of simmering, a hand full of fresh dill in cheesecloth. I fished all the wonderful meat, and vegies out, and then strained the soup twice in a kitchen strainer and once through cheesecloth. It was strong and flavorful. I froze 6 to 8 oz little tupperwares full for after surgery and drank some before with with either the unflavored protein or unjury chicken soup flavored protein.
I hate things really salty, so I did not add salt to mine. I cannot consume artificial sweetners so I NEVER drank isopure or even one shake. I made soups and added protein to them until I could eat enough to not need it.
When my 85 year old dad had horrible gall bladder issues, and had it removed, I made this for him too -- clear fluids only and he hated the buillion served in the hospital. I got permission to bring it, and the nurses put it in their fridge for him. I also made him a beef variety by using beef soup bones and cubing lean beef. Added vegies and aromatics to flavor the soup and triple strained again. After his surgery, I added in rice and pasta to the broth as his physician directed.

I asked about this once when I had to have clears for something (not bariatric surgery) and they said anything with protein is not a clear liquid. If you Google "clear liquids", you can find lists (since this is a medical term) and nothing like Isopure is on them.
That doesn't mean some programs might allow them anyway but technically it doesn't meet the definition of a clear.
