6 Month Blood Work A1C
As of today I've lost 100 pounds in about 6 months and I am feeling great. I got my 6 month blood work done last week and my primary care doctor called and said that I'm prediabetic and I need to see her about "dietary changes" because my A1C was up to 6.0 from 5.4 at my 3 month tests. I eat under 40-30 carbs a day, 700-800 calories a day, and 70-80 grams of protein a day. I've never had blood sugar problems or diabetes. My fasting glucose level from my 3 month visit was 77 but I'm not sure what it was this time yet.
It would suck if I develop it now that I'm healthy.
Has anyone had this happen to them before?
Does a low carb diet effect a1C?

I think someone else just posted a similar post on the main VSG board in the past couple of days. Maybe you can scroll back and look for it. Or search for diabetes...I don't think they used A1C in their post, just the word diatetic or prediabetic. I have no advice for you, but hope someone else can offer some help. Good luck.
I decided to do a search for you and found there is a diabetic board on this site. Here is the link....maybe they can offer some help. http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/diabetes/

Same exact thing happened to me. I check my fasting sugars now in the morning and they are still around 104. (Yesterday I was elated when I got an 87). My lipid panel is worse than when I was fat. My A1C is up to 5.9. I am very unhappy with all this. I eat under 20 carbs a day and have lost 110 pounds. I do 5 hours of intense cardio (Zumba) per week. I have 50 more pounds to go to get to a BMI of 20. My surgeon said all the diabetes factors will not go away until I am completely rid of all of my belly fat. To that end I am determined to end this thing at a BMI in the low 20's. Try to get rid of your belly fat, then re-evaluate things. I am trying not to worry too much until that happens. They are going to re-evaluate me at the 1 year mark (I am at 9 months right now.) In the meantime, consult with your MD, but try cutting carbs a little bit more, just to hedge your bets. Good luck. This sucks, doesn't it? Esp when real diabetics, some on 3 meds a day, are able to throw away their diabetic meds the first week and their sugars completely normalize. It just does not make any sense that we completely change our lifestye and eating and exercise habits, and things get worse for us. Also, have your doc order a blood sugar machine for you. You can check your fasting levels in the morning to see if you are making any progress.
About the cholesterol numbers:
Sometimes when we lose a lot of weight fast, our serum cholesterol numbers go up. But it's a temporary thing and it's not associated with heart attack or anything bad.
If they are up and it's been six months since you hit goal, that's different and more cause for concern.
