I guess I hurt someone's feelings on the VSG board

So a pre-op poster said that their surgeon told them they'd be able to eat pretzels and pizza (guess that's true - haven't tried 'cause I'm still in the loss phase). I gave the obvious "Yeah, you probably could but why would you have this surgery planning to eat junk food?" response.

I think I hurt their feelings. They deleted the post.

So does this mean I'm a vet? Or just a meanie?

Hi there,

I eat pizza weekly...Load it up with protein and yum!!!....It might not be a huge amount, but,I have my pizza.Plus, I'd choose pretzels over chips any day!! We can have anything. Just in moderation!...Some people choose not to eat them because of the carbs! A serving once and awhile isn't going to hurt anyone!

I agree with Donna that maybe those foods are not something you want to eat on a daily basis but some people do eat junk on occassion and it does not affect their weight loss.

I think we have to be careful not to be the food police... each and everyone of us has to find what will and wont work for us..

some of us do really low carb, some not so much, if her surgeon says its ok who are we to say its not?

I eat pizza too.  Sometimes I just eat the toppings but if it's a flat bread pizza or thin crust I will eat a piece of pizza and love it.  I eat pretzels too.  It's healthier than ritz crackers or many others.  My bmi is 20 and I would still like to lose a couple more lbs.  This surgery has allowed me to eat like a thin person.  I eat almost anything, just small amounts.

Mom - I saw their original post and I had to back away!  Otherwise I would have posted something very brash in response.  I ended up blocking them because I thought it was passive-aggressive and/or childish of them to edit their post into something completely different after you and a few other posters took time to give them the straight scoop.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Gotta pick your battles......

Seems I got it down to people trying to hurt themselves......and the people who encourage support of them...

Hey, we all read the same info.....it's not like it's not out there.....after healing if someone can lose weight eating fried rice and carmel corn......knock yourself out! Go for it !!!

I say better you then me.  I am actively staying away from posts like that now.  I just get too worked up about it and it's not healthy.  I guess I AM the food police, but only my own food police. Sure we can eat all the junk in the world, nothing is off limits, that's why long term studies show weight gain trends for certain people.  I talked to my surgeon about this at dinner yesterday.  I asked him why he hasn't published the much awaited five year study he has promised to release over the Summer.  He told me that he has about 72% response rate and needs to put more time into getting the responses from the rest of the patients, but he will publish soon.  I asked him to tell me what the data shows at this point.  He told me that it's not really a five year study anymore but more like an eight year study now and that the trends show that smaller size sleeves and continuing to eat dense protein first, shows strong correlation with long term maintenance.  I asked if regain and time were highly positively correlated, he told me they were not.  He promised to publish within a year.  I think knowing what I know, I have to stay away from most food posts, as I am sure to hurt peoples feelings.  I  am not perfect, I eat off program at times, I just came back from Disneyland and I stayed off program for a number of meals.  I mostly object to the mind set that says eating pizza and pretzels or other junk food is OK on a regular basis or is something to strive for in the future.  I limit the junk to a bare minimum and see it as something to be watched closely in maintenance.  I can eat it but it is not my best choice, or even my good choice.  We all do the best we can and none of us are perfect, but I shoot for my best choice and if I fall short of my mark, I reevaluate and take better aim next time.

I don't think being a meanie or vet has anything to do with it.

I probably wouldn't have even replied because honestly, they're going to do what they want.

I eat pizza, chips, and crackers/pretzels on a weekly basis as well.

Some of us do NOT have to restrict certain foods for the rest of our lives.

I also drink soda, and alcohol and I eat foods that others wouldn't dream of eating. BUT, it's what works for me, and my lifestyle. Not saying it's the "right way", but it's my way, and it's working for me.

Losing stage way different mentality. Maintenance and life after losing I had to find my normal, 3 saltines didn't make me fat, 3 sleeves of saltines made me fat.

Yeah, I know. But this was a pre-op newbie not a maintenance person. I guess you had to read the original post...I was concerned that this person thought they could eat whatever and succeed.

I'll just stay away from posts like that from now on.

It's tough to avoid those topics, I struggle with it too. But, I have to remember, there are a few people who are able to eat just whatever, smaller portions, never have to count carbs or calories and find great success with the sleeve. I couldn't have done it that way, and I was super strict with myself through my losing stage.  Those who do find success with just doing it differently are few and far between, but they're out there. I read your reply and figured the original post was pretty absurd. I don't think your reply was "off the cuff" or completely tactless. So, I wouldn't worry about it ;)
