My program warns against un-cooked celery. They say they've had people in the ER with blockages from it. They didn't say how far out that occured, but they basically told us only cooked celery that is finely diced.  Their program is fairly conservative, though. My surgeon says no NSAIDS for life, for example.

Thanks Frisco.

Kaiser says to never eat celery again, but they say the same thing whether you're RNY, Band or Sleeve.  I eat celery now and have never had a problem with it.  Earlier out I made sure it was cut into tiny pieces in chicken salad and it never bothered me, but I waited until after 6 months out.

Great explanation Frisco. I made sure my husband read it. He just had his consult with Alisha for his upcoming surgery. She talked about the not drinking and dense protein but I think it really helps people be more compliant if they understand the medical reasons for these rules. Sure helps me to think about that little ol' valve working for me. And makes me all the more appreciative that I fought to get the vsg and didn't have the rny like my insurer wanted.

So nice going to post something so important and yet not always explained by professionals. You can add this to your cookbook which we eagerly await.     Diane

I read once about someone getting a bezoar in his stomach from eating coconut. I think it's the reason some docs say no celery or any other hard to digest food.

From Wikipedia:
A bezoar (/ˈbiːzɔər/) is a mass found trapped in the gastrointestinal system (usually the stomach),[2] though it can occur in other locations

Great post, great explaination.

The one thing that I know the NUTs at my dr. office stress is not eating and drinking together because of exactly what the guy shows in his video of applesauce through a funnel... and of course they are all a LOT more familiar with the RNY/Band than the sleeve. And I realize that emptying the contents of your stomach will cause you to reach the 'hunger' level faster - and I do follow the rule about not eating and drinking together - but I wonder about hunger. If you don't have hunger, does any of it really matter? I eat by the clock not by a hunger signal.

Again, though I follow the rules...just curious how others plan their eating if they don't have hunger.
