Embarassing gas problem

I am 13 months out and doing well except for one problem - very smelly gas!  I don't eat a lot of veggies and I get most of my fiber (which isn't enough) through Flat Out bread and Joseph's Bran Flax pitas, and almonds and peanuts.  I eat a lot of cottage cheese and get enough protein.  I cut out sugar alcohols thinking that was causing my problem, but it didn't change.  I take a probiotic pill daily thinking that my help, but not so far.  I take Gas X gel tablets but that doesn't relieve the problem.  I've had this problem for at least 6 months and never think to ask my md about it (or should I say PA).  I have no problems with any foods, and I eat pretty low carb, 40-50 g per day.  I would love to hear any suggestions!  Thank you!  You are my support group as my doc's is too far away for me to go to :)

About 6 months ago I was having the same problem.  Same exact thing you are describing except I was also really bloated.  My doctor ordered an upper GI with a barium swallow through and what they diagnosed was extreme constipation.  I was pooping with what I thought was a regular and fair amount but it wasn't enough.  I had alot of poop inside and it was causing all the gas and bloating.  (I know, TMI).  I have sinced increased the fiber, and I also take a prescribed fiber mix that my doctor gave me and low and behold the gas has significantly decreased.  Maybe try and take some sort of fiber supplement like benefiber, or other types of of products that will help clean you out.  I also went to a health store and got a natural laxative.  I find if I stay on top of it, I do not have a problem with gas or bloating.

Good luck to you.  I know it can be really frustrating and embarrassing.

Are you still taking a PPI? I had to stop taking mine because I wasn't properly digesting my food and that was leading to really horrible gas. When I stopped the PPI it only took a couple days for my body to readjust and the problem was solved.

Another thought is that you might be gluten sensitive and I can assure you that will cause some paint peeling gas! I don't have Celiac disease but I am gluten sensitive so I have to avoid it as much as possible.

Sometimes it takes a little trial and error to pinpoint the reason for the gas. I hope you can get some relief!

Take care...

I had to start taking two 400mg Magnesium caps at night to help get the pooping going really good.  That has helped a lot.  When I haven't pooped good I tend to be gassy but as soon as I go it is relieved.  I know I don't eat enough fiber either so the Mag caps help tremendously.

Are they just called magnesium tablets? Doc's office recommended Devrom to neutralize odor! Don't know if those work either.

They are capsules and you can get them anywhere.  I got mine at Costco.  I've tried Devrom and it doesn't work very well at all.

Thanks!  Good to know that about Devrom before buying.

My gassiness is very much tied to what I eat. Too many carbs, especially sugar, and I toot up a storm. Probiotics help but so does cutting out the carbs.

Thanks! I don't eat sugary foods. My carbs come from nuts, cottage cheese and flax grains. I thought it was due to sugar alcohols but have cut them out with no change. You know it's getting bad when my husband comments on it!
