Is there a "best" time to take PPI's?

I have seen a lot written lately about the use of PPI's and the fact that perhaps PPI's are inhibiting some of our absorption because of the elimination of some digestive juices.  I take 1- 2 Nexium a day (I had GERD before surgery as well and took 1 Pantoloc a day) at fairly random spaced out times.  Should I take them with meals, apart from meals, with vitamins, apart from vitamins?  Is what I am eating/drinking at the time affected by my Nexium so that it's important to have it before coffee (or with) for example or is it that I want to have a build up of Nexium over a longer term.  Is taking antacids instead when needed any better?

I do find I have a big appetite and am concerned about going off of the Nexium worrisome as some say it helps to control hunger (although I'm always hungry even taking them).

The best time to take them is whatever time works to control your heartburn. Which is different for everyone.

Some people take them first thing in the morning. Some last thing at night. Some both of those times.

I took them at noon with my noon vitamins and lunch. That was about 2-3 hours before I would experience heartburn (if I was going to experience it) so that worked better for me than taking them in the morning. I never tried taking them at night.

But they are supposed to work in a more long-term, systematic way... which is why they sometimes take days or even weeks to start working so I don't think most people need to take them at a special time.

I was just today told to go off my nexium for a bit because it decreases iron absorption.. Now I am anemic, so it's a bigger issue for me, but I would take it away from iron (or your multi if that's the iron you take) if you are concerned about absorbing it at all..

Hi Sandy,

Hope you find some answers here.  Sorry you have this going on, it is too bad the surgery did not take care of it for you.

Big hugs,

I take my Protonix at 7:30 in the morning and evening.  Iron does require an acidic environment for absorption, so VitaLady's TenderIron comes with Vitamin C.  I take it about 11:00 at night, which is well away from any other vites/supplements I take during the day.

Alternately, you can take a heme form of iron which doesn't require an acidic environment. That's what I do.

(Oops, forgot to take my mornng dose... thanks for the reminder!)
