Questions about B Vitamins & Getting Lab Work done
Hi Everyone,
Can anyone discuss with me about the "B" Viatamins?
Which ones are important to take and why? What is the difference between the different types?
I don't have much selection of "B" vitamins down here and I am thinking of ordering exactly what I need and should be taking. I am thinking I may be low and it is affecting my energy.
Thanks so much,
Cindy

I'm no expert on the B vitamins, but I think we can get low on B12 because of a lack of "instrinsic factor." On my labs, I've never had any B12 deficiencies, and in fact, I was high because I was taking one of those sublinguals every day. I was, however, just a touch low on B1 one time (I think that's thiamine). Anyway, my doctor said to just take a good multi-B vitamin and I'd be fine. The one I take is Costco's Kirkland B-100. The only problem with it is that it upsets my tummy, so I need to take it after a meal...

Specifically as it relates to VSG the MAIN B vitamin that you need is a sublingual B-12. Why? Because with the removal of our stomach was have lost the largest part of our body that helps absorb B-12 and that's called the Intrinsic Factor.
ALL other B vitamins (and technically including B-12) should be dictated by YOUR Lab results.
The main ones I know are B-1 and B-6 and of course B-12. I was low on B-1 before surgery but since it's fine now.
I have been taking sublingual B-12 at 1000mcg, 3x a week since surgery. My labs come back mid-normal range.

All of the B-vitamins are important, especially Thiamine. If you are deficient in thiamine, it can result in neurological damage (numbness, tingling, cognitive dysfunction).
B-12 needs to be sublingual (under the tongue) or injection, since we lack the intrinsic factor for absorbing this vitamin. Deficiency can result in neurological symptoms, such as numbness and tingling, and poor energy. If it gets too low, the damage can be permanent.
So, look for sublingual B-12. The program that I went through recommends at least 100 % of the RDA. I use a B-100 from Cost****irkland brand) that is very inclusive and high in everything.
Poor energy can be caused by so many things. Are you supplementing with a multi-vitamin? vitamin D3? Iron? Have you had any recent labs done?

See Lizanne's link. I just had my yearly labs done and what I had tested was very close to the labs that are listed on her link.
Get baseline labs, then you have a starting point and will be able to add or subtract based upon the results.
You need to be taking the supplements that everyone is recommending.

I am taking my Women to Women viatamins supplements daily... not sure what I have said that is leading people to think otherwise, and my last labs came back good, they are on my profile. And the vitamins I am taking are later in this thread, I just posted them.
So, it sounds like I need to get 'all' or as many as I possibly can get done here in Belize. You say to get my baseline labs done, is this terminology they will understand here in Belize? There were several they could not check for me last time... it was a bit of a gong show the whole thing.
This time I am not going to the lab, I am going to go to a doctor and sit and chat about what I need, I just hope he understands what the 'baseline labs' are.
Do I have to stop taking my vits for 3 days before the tests?
Either way, I think I will get EVERYTHING done again. Hubby is a tight wad and does not mean to make me feel guilty, but does. Too bad it is my health, and I am not a spender, so I am blowing the wad and getting this done.
Thanks so much for your help, you are a sweetheart.

No babygirl, "baseline" does not mean the same to everyone.
Give him your list of labs, and then you get the results back, this is what we call baseline, this is the place where we start to see what needs supplementing, paring back on, what is good, not so great, blahblahb.
Stopping your vitamins - honestly babygirl, to sto*****t to stop is going to depend on who you ask. :} So - just decide for yourownself!
Barry is a good steward of yall's money, like Fella is a good steward of our money. if it were up to you and me, we would have everything we want and live in a box. :} You and me, we are responsible for how we take their words and decide if they are hurtful or not.
Barry wants you healthy, but its a bite out of the budget. That is just a fact. Its not personal, its the budget man talking. :}
Ask me how I know.
