High cholesterol????

I have been off my pills for 14 months now but for the past 5 months I have been watching my cholesterol go up. It was 193 than 200 than 203 now today I got a call it is 230. I do not want to go back on the pill but looks like  I am about to.

I feel like I failed this surgery. My plan was getting this surgery to be able to lose weight and get off the cholesterol pill I failed the pill part. Does anyone on here take cholesterol pills still??. I just do not get how my body can lose weight but still have high cholesterol. It is depressing to me.
My surgeon gave me the tool. Now it is up to me to use it right.

You know, some stuff is just hereditary. My cholesterol is fine, but I still need to take blood pressure meds and even had to add one. I was complaining to my doctor that I had lost all this weight, was exercising, etc. and she just reminded me that thin people have high blood pressure (and high cholesterol) as well...so don't feel like a failure!

I am thinking the same way. I am off blood pressure pills but that to is getting high again. I exercise like a fool and still after 14 months I have the same old problems as I did when i was fatter. But I will have to do what my PCP tells me. thanks for the info.

Sad but true.  Some things are just genetics, we can't do much about it.  I still have cholesterol issues, even though I am thin and exercise regularly now.  My doctor wants me back on statins, but I just don't want to, not yet.  I also do lots of weight bearing exercise, yet still, I have developed osteopenia.  It's just life, these bodies will self destruct no matter what we do.

There was a discussion on this a while back. I NEVER had high cholesterol but my 1 year labs read 199! Back in March people on this forum were discussing this article. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0887/is_n6_v10/ai_109 78163/

When I did my one year lab my Cholesterol level dropped to 179. I was on 10 mg of Lipitor (i used to be on 40 mg prior to surgery.

My Dr. and I decided to stop the lipitor as my level may slightly rise but should remain in the normal range.

I was happy that I had kicked the pill. Today I got the results of my 18 month labs and every thing was in range except my cholesterol. It was 260. I was floored. My HDL was really good but my LDL was out of control.

My Dr. Said I should go back on liptor but to try it 3 days a week instead of everyday and repeat the test in 3 months.

On my way home I started to think about this. And I blame my diet. I eat too much egg and cheese. For example my staple breakfast is one egg with Sausage and cheese on a slice of a whole wheat English muffin. My main snack is cheese.

I think that I need to change my diet and see if that makes my numbers better.

My cholesterol went up after surgery, too.  I contribute it to eating a higher protein diet.

You also have to look at the values for your other lipid factions. For example, my one year labs showed a total cholesterol of 210. Better, if it was under 200, but still within the acceptable range. My triglycerides were 64, which is good for me. LDL was 110, better if it was under 100, but still within the acceptable range. The kicker was my HDL level; it was 92. It has never been that high, so it counts as being a negative factor, which decreases some other risk factors for cardiac disease. Six months ago, the HDL was 73, so the exercise has made a HUGE difference.

Your body makes cholesterol, no matter what you do, and genetics is huge. Exercise can help to raise your HDL, which is the protective faction, and can help to lower your overall risk factors. So, even though, we have lost all this weight, our genetics and some of our food choices can still impact the values, and the need to take cholesterol lowering medication. Yeah, it sucks, but being morbidly obese is alot worse.

Some people still have sleep apnea after losing a large amount of weight. That would be really frustrating, but even skinny people have sleep apnea. Surgery helps to decrease many problems, but it doesn't cure or solve everything. So, having to take cholesterol lowering medication may be a pain in  the butt, but the alternative is alot worse.

I had high cholesterol and was on statins before surgery and struggled to get it to come down after surgery.

But the last time i went to the drs from cutting down on cheese and not eating so many eggs my cholesterol was finally almost in the normal ranges so dr said to get it tested again in 3 months.

After reading all the conflict on statins its not something that im willing to jump back on with out trying everything i can first.
