Bounce Back Weight
The head of Northern California Kaiser Bariatrics, Dr. Fisher, surprised us last Wednesday night at our support group and came in for an hour of candid conversation with post and pre-ops. It was great to be in such a relaxed situation and get to ask questions.
I asked him about the "inevitable" bounce back. He said the number is 5 pounds. I asked RNY and Sleeve and he said yes. He said at some point that weight may/will come back regardless of whether we're doing things right or not. More weight comes back for other reasons than the natural bounce back.
I guess I'm going to have another 5 pounds tacked onto what I what to shed. I was so happy that the number that he gave wasn't something like 10% etc.
He also said that our ending BMI can depend on where we started. Someone that started with a 35 should be able to get to the low/middle BMI range while someone that started 40+ may end up with a BMI that's a little higher than "normal" range.

My doctor would probably say that the bounce back in not guaranteed and that it varies from 5-10 lbs. He would also say that many of his patients do NOT experience it at all. I am hoping to be one of them. :) He gave me a time frame of one to two years out. I am already at two years, so I hope I am past the danger zone but I will not be totally comfortable until I am at least five years out.
Amen to that! I hope that my ability thus far to stay in the 2 pound range will also continue further out. I know what to do to get the 2 pounds down and it's generally because of added carbs or lack of hydration. I hope none of us get that bounce back. I think that support groups, OH and everything else that we do will help in the long run. How can it not? :)

When I had my 6 month visit, I asked the Bariatric Internist the same question. She said anything more than 5 lbs, was related to people going back to former habits. She also said that they had many people who didn't have a large amount of bounce back weight. So, it does seem related to maintaining the lifestyle changes.
Interesting about the BMI range. I think, because I lost so much pre-op, it helped me to get the middle of my BMI range.

Here is my take on Bounce Back Weight......
I'm at like 21 months out..... 7 months maintaining.....
I've heard what Dr.C has to say about it.....Like Elina has mentioned..... and Lee's post sounds very inline....
I'm thinking at this point from what I've learned about "myself"..........
Bounce Back/Regain what ever you want to call it is jusnt another one of those things that is controled by me/you/us.........
I could be wrong..... it happened once before...... That's the way I see it going......
You go up 5lbs. You either gotta be happy with it or get back on the WL plan and drop 5lbs.
I don't see how much simpler it could be?????
