what to eat in airports?

Ok so I traveled back to the midwest where I am from. Takes three flights so I was in four airports in one day of various sizes. Had my entire itenerery changed at the start and barely got on a standby to make new connections. horrid.

Anyway, was in airports or planes from 7:30 am until 11pm. I brought some almonds and a couple of protein bars. I ate a "lite "yogurt at one stop, (no greek available of course) a glass of tomato juice on a plane, a glass of lowfat milk on another plane, a cup of split pea soup in another airport, a power crunch bar, and some almonds. Got another glass of skim milk when i got to my destination after an hour drive from the last airport.

So I snooped around the various food courts and options and there did not seem to be a lot of suitable choices for a maintaining sleever much less someone in weight loss phase. What the heck are you suppose to eat in airports? They are so full of overpriced garbage!!!   It was made more difficult by not knowing which flight I was going to get on and having to wait around gates and nag airlinge "customer service" (what a joke).

So those of you who travel, what do you eat when you have a whole day in airports and planes?

I bring protein power, bars, cheese sticks and nuts in my purse.

I eat at the food courts though. Maybe I'll get an entree at Panda Express or a Chicken Sandwich at a fast food joint. I won't eat the bun usually but sometimes I do. Also, there is usually a sandwich place and I can eat the lunch meat out of the sandwich.

I travel with Nut, protein bars, beef jerky, peanut butter packs....sometimes string cheese. Sugar free single shot drink powders.

- Chicken Caesar for $14 is always available......

- Insides of a chicken or fish taco.....even Burrito innards ......taco salad without eating the fried tortilla bowl.

- Meatballs

- Chinese Stir fry

- Chicken Wings

Your not always gonna be able to eat as clean as home.....but if you keep your portions in check...you can eat anything really. NO CINNABON'S w/Extra Butter and Glaze!!! (the old me)

Food/eating is not the problem....eating $3 worth of a $12 meal is.....whatta ya gonna do???

I take food with me on the plane if I'm leaving from home and I go to the market in foreign cities to get what I need/want as well.

Airport foods that I do get:

Five Guys child's burger hold bun
Chicken Salad sandwich toss the bread
Salad topped with protein
mexican burrito bowl, hold the rice please
I won't buy chicken because it's generally too dry for me

Most airports now carry protein bars next to the candy bars and also have bags of almonds.  I've seen RTD Muscle Milk in the milk case in several airports as well.

I carry food with me too.  String cheese, almonds, peanut butter packets, jerkey and protein bars.   I've gotten a chicken or turkey sandwich and eaten the meat, lettuce and tomato out of the middle...tossed the bread.  I've also gotten a hamburger and eaten the meat.  I traveled in China for 3 weeks this spring and took these snacks with me (minus the string cheese) and did quite well.

I always keep a protein bar in my purse....I never know when I'll be stuck somewhere and get hungry.  I only eat 1/2 at a time, but I still eat 5 times a day now so I like to have something available.

I always get Panda Express Mushroom Chicken. It's one of their "wok smart" entrees. Just get the entree, no rice or noodles!

Other than bringing your own foods (which I prefer), if you are going to eat out, try burger king's burgers.  They are supposed to be flame broiled and have no fillers or seasonings so probably your best choice of pure protein.  You can ask them to give you your burger in a bowl too.. make sure you don't get catsup!

I don't care about the price when traveling, but I like to find quality protein if I can.  I also travel with my snacks, as PPs have mentioned, but on my last trip I did end up buying one of those pre-packaged chicken caesar salads a couple of times.  I ate the chicken only, and dipped it in the dressing.  (Ate the shaved parmesan too.)  I swear one of the salads I bought was from a Cinnabon!

Other possibilities are chicken or tuna sandwiches, where you eat the filling only.  (Have a plastic fork or spork with you.)  Wendy's chili, if the airport has a Wendy's.  Pretty much any kind of sandwich or taco where you eat the filling/protein only.  Our tiny tummies can be satisfied with the fillings from one or two tacos.  (Frankly, I'd get a regular taco from Taco Bell and eat the shell also, what's the harm in a one-time situation.)  Most airports now have fresh fruit also - one airport newsstand had a little basket of apples and bananas at the checkout counter.  Expensive, but what price good, whole food, yannow?

I do worry about too much salt, sometimes, but it can't be helped when traveling.
