Going camping next week

Next week is our annual camping trip to the UP of Michigan. I am doing the grocery shopping Friday (we leave Saturday). In the past, camping food was often pretty carb heavy - mac n cheese, rice-a-roni, Lipton pasta sides. Breakfast was always cereal or pancakes. Burgers, chips, potato salad. You get the idea. Oh, and then of course there's the ever present s'mores fixings. I'm dreading this more than a little. Last year our trip was one month before my surgery. I was 310 pounds. Honestly, camping sucked last year. It's no fun when you can't even find a camp chair that holds you, KWIM?

Anyhoo, I need to plan out our meals tomorrow. Any suggesting for family-friendly (my twins are 4 years old), camping friendly meals that aren't loaded with carbs?

Make deviled eggs, or tuna salad, or egg salad.
When you BBQ  make some chicken chicken chicken.
Have salad stuff there....  go to whole foods and get some
protein chips or flaxseed crackers so you feel your eating some
chips.  enjoy those chips with some mild salsa.  Have some
cottage cheese there,  fruit,  celery and whole peanut butter / almond butter.
make some grilled fish or shrimp. Grill some veggies with olive oil and garlic
or just plain.

Just dont eat the junk food......

for dessert have the sugar free pudding available and bag up some
chocolate protein powder to throw into it with some raw almonds...

Have fun camping.  You can do this.  Just make sure there is food there for you.

eggs, string cheese, apple with peanut butter makes a great snack and the twins should like it. Cold cuts, veggies with salsa or hummus, tuna fish. Plenty of fluids. A cooler should keep yogurt fresh, small amount of berries. Just a few things that come to mind.

You've been given some great ideas that I'm jotting down, too!  I get into serious trouble when I don't plan for myself.  I can plan for everyone else and be the perfect hostess.  For me? Not always.  I just plain feel better mentally and physically when I take care of No. 1!  You can do it!

Great suggestions, everyone! We have a pop-up camper with a fridge and a huge cooler, so bringing chilled things is no problem. Thanksfully, my kids and husband are not carb dependant so I really don't HAVE to have a carby side dish with meals. I guess sometimes I feel like the girls need the calories etc from the carbs, they shouldn't just have to have meat and salad alone. But on the nights that I make things like greek salad with chicken, they don't complain that there isn't rice or potatoes or pasta with it. They're great kids.

I go camping twice a year and I do the following:

1) Protein shake or eggs for breakfast
2) tuna or chicken salad for lunch
3) cheese sticks, beef jerky, fruit, raw veggies, protein bars and nuts for snacks
4) soup or chili for dinner though this trip I do with a group and at least one dinner is a potluck - so I eat the meat and veggies from whatever they are serving for that one- we usually have a bbq
5) protein hot chocolate for around the campfire

For s'mores, I have a rule and I follow it. My rule is usually that I'm allowed one the entire trip. But no more. Sometimes I just have the chocolate from it because that's all I really like though.

I wish I would have thought to order some of the protein cocoa from Nashua Nutrition - boo!

Actually, I'm not a huge fan of s'mores themselves. I don't like milk chocolate. I just want the toasted marshmallows. :)

This is a great post...thanks Jennifer for starting it! We are camping in Aug. with a group of friends who do not know that my hubby and I have BOTH been sleeved. We do mostly group meals with a couple of individual meals tossed in. So it will be interesting to see what the group meals consist of.

We'll be bringing lots of protein snacks to eat for sure! AND I plan on making my own beef jerky as well, it is a big crowd pleaser and perfect for us to snack on.

We camp a lot and this weekend (starting tomorrow) will be the big bash of the season.  There will be about 40 of us.  Everyone brings food for a "community" meal.  We do a huge b'fast with sausage, bacon, egss, biscuits, gravy, french toast.....on and on.  We have a huge smoker and will do 4 chickens and 2 huge pork loins.  Then there's the sea food.  Yep, shrimp, lobster, crab legs, scampi....all cooked on the grill.  You just can't imagine how much food gets is there.

Lots of protein, as you can see.  There will be a large variety of foods, but there is always fruit and we grill various veggies.

Since I'm at goal, I will take a bite or 2 of a couple different desserts.  But I stick with the protein first and since I'm a big meat lover, it isn't a problem for me.

I did fine last summer for the big bash.  I can eat more this year, so I'm going to do my best to limit the sweets.  I've been losing the past couple of weeks and I want to lose 2 more pounds before my birthday.

Some people might not support my WLS decision.
Those people remind me of slinkys. Not good for much but it would would bring a smile to my face if someone pushed them down the stairs.
