Supplements in Maintenance

For the vets, what kind of supplementation are you using?

When I went to my classes at the Weight Management clinic they really didn’t know anything about VSG’s and told me to supplement the same as an RNY. I think that now that I’m up to about 1500-1800 calories for maintaining that it’s overkill, after all I don’t malabsorb anything.  I was suppose to take 4 calciums, 2 multi’s, and I have been taking B12 (because I lack intrinsic in my small stomach) a couple of times a week as well as the odd vitamin A, potassium, Zinc, probiotics etc.

By the way, my labs have been regular and excellent.

I take a B12 sublingual, Flintsone's chewable, and a Citracal, daily(well, I try but honestly I go through periods of not taking anything!).  My bloodwork is perfect, so far.

By the way, I LOVE your avatar!!

I would say if it ain't broke, don't fix it applies here. Your labs are good so why change your routine at all? I take two multis, calcium, b-complex, d, c, omega 3, and iron... Mostly because my diet isn't varied enough for adequate nutrition (ie, no fish at all).. And I still do not eat enough to trust cutting back on supplements personally.

I am still loving life with my sleeve! Been maintaining at or below goal for over 4 years!

I maintain on about 1200 calories per day whi*****ludes 70 g protein which doctor says i must do for life. I take a kids chewable vitamin twice a day. I take a total of 1000 units a day of calcium citrate. I think my doc wanted 1500 but i got mixed up and do 1000. thats two tablets am and two pm. I take a fish oil for cholesterol. Thats it. I had the full vitamin and such lab work a few months ago and all were perfect. So doctor isn't going to make me test every year like he does for some. YaY, it ain't cheap and they take about 10 vials of blood!!!!      Once in awhile I take a zinc if i feel a cold coming on but thats not often. no longer take potassium as I used to as it went with BP meds and I don't need those anymore.

I was on calcium before wls for bone health as I am approaching old lady status. thats it. sounds like you are doing well too. if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!!    Diane

Our program has recommendations for VSG and they start everyone out with 2 multis and 1500 mg calcium citrate. I still do that even though I eat around 1800-2100 calories a day and there is nothing in my labs that suggests I don't need those vitamins.

Oh they are starting to recommend people supplement with D3 as well, not because of surgery, but because most of us have low D3.

B12 is optional, only if blood work suggests it, and Iron is optional as well.

In addition to the minimum recommended, I take iron because my multi doesn't have it and I take a fish oil capsule because I don't eat a lot of fish and I take ubiquitol because it's supposed to help with endurance workouts and energy levels.

Some more thoughts... if you take a multi, make sure it doesn't have too much calcium. Calcium interferes with the absorption of iron.

Also, the calcium in most multis is not well absorbed by us and can cause kidney stones because of that.

Finally, the iron in most multis is not well-absorbed by us either. So, if you have iron issues, take a separate iron tablet in heme or carbonyl form (not ferrous).
