Vegetables and Fruits

So exactly how much in the way of fruits and veggies are you maintainers getting these days? I know "normal" people are supposed to have five servings and I guess each is a half cup but we don't have room for this. I worry about not getting enough.

At dinner I might have two asparagus spears  or two sppons of broccoli or cooked zuccini.  And at lunch some grapes or a clemintine. Maybe some mellon or blueberries. So I maybe get more like two 1/4 cup servings. Doesn't seem like much. Rarely eat raw vegetables.

What do you guys do?

Diane

I been doing veg only snacks.....green beans, broccoli, coleslaw, cucumber........

For me it works out way better than trying to get any kind of measurable amount in during a meal. I do like to eat a little veg with a meal when it really compliments the protein from a taste/flavor standpoint.

Frozen fruit.....blueberries or strawberries in my morning protein shake works out pretty good.

I try to eat about 1/2 cup veggies a day.  Sometimes I'll stir 1 oz of sliced apple into my cottage cheese.  Beyond that, I rely on my multi vitamin.

I to had the same worry.  My reason was because of fiber, I was so worried about toxins in my body because I didn't "go" to the restroom daily.  I now drink a fruit veggie shake everyday and I love them.  I purchased a vitamixer (best thing ever)!!!!  I now have a green shake daily.  Yesterday I had a shake with spinach, carrots, strawberries, mango, and pineapple.  Somedays I use kale as my veggie.  I now have a BM daily and I feel so much better.  I feel like I am getting my "greens" and not overeating and not cheating myself by eating veggies over protein.  Some mornings I put a little protein powder in my shake and it is a great breakfast.

I am so glad you posted this because I was wondering the same thing.  It is so hard to change the way you think after surgery.  I know changing my thinking has been the biggest struggle.

I eat raw carrots all day long, one or two at a time.. And clementines when I want something on the go.. I usually eat fruit with a lil whipped cream on it for dessert.. Oh, and a lil of whatever veggie is for dinner.. More than I ate preop when I was eating chips and fast food at every meal, lmao..

I am still loving life with my sleeve! Been maintaining at or below goal for over 4 years!

Thanks for the thread.

I'm just curious to know if all of you ate fruit during your weightloss phase.  I have pretty much avoided fruit (with a few special treats along the way), as well as veggies that are high in carbs for the past 9 months.  I would love to add back in grapes or something like that, but the last time I tried to to that I stalled... and I assumed the grapes had something to do with it.

Are you saying that you stuck  mainly to protein during your weight loss phase?

Pretty much yes....... and no.....

Between traveling and eating out and not having 100% control of what was in the food.....

You get far more carbs just by accident.......than we all realize....

Most any kind of soups and sauces have a certain amount of sugar in it..... and even though you don't see it or taste it....soups and sauces are thickened with flour/corn starch/masa.
Lots of meats and fish have been dredged and floured or marinated in something with sugar in it before cooking. Also remember lots foods and sauces have wine as an ingredient.

So my thought has always been....if your/were counting carbs...ya gotta error on the light side. If your daily number for carbs is 40..... by the time you count 40......your probably at 50 or 60

I was pretty compliant during weight loss......maybe 85% correct....and not cause I was cheating.....85% cause I didn't always meet protein, liquid, exercise goals more than the eating part.

My thought was/is..... stick with the proven plan as best as possible through WL......"moderation is for maintenance" Even in maintenance I'm still 80% WL mode...it didn't vary much for me.
