Food Label Fibs

I am so disgusted at food labeling fibs!  I have come to depend on a product called Ole Extreme Wellness Tortillas.  The labels said 71 cal./ 5 carbs/ 8 grams protein.  I loved them, used them all the time for the past month or so.  I went to buy some today and the labels are all different.  Now it says 90 cal/ 17 carbs/
5 protein!  So have they been lying all along and now are just forced to change the labels????  This could explain why my wt loss has slowed so much for the last 2 months!  The same thing happened with my peanut butter!  Naturally More.  The label used to say 168 cal, now it says 200.  I hate being deceived!  This information is important to me!  Now I need to come up with another low carb bread/ wrap sort of thing!  Any ideas???

They're not supposed to mislead on their labels, but that doesn't mean they don't.  What I think happens more often is, a company may have to change their formulation for some reason - change of suppliers, different machinery, new FDA regulation, who knows?  I learned to be diligent when tracking food on SparkPeople - you can pull-in a food that someone else has entered.  For the longest time I just used someone else's entry without looking at the stats, but in the last couple months I've been comparing the item in my hand with the item they entered, and the stats often don't match.  So I've been a lot more alert, glad to see you are too!

Ugh. I hate when labels lie. I have often wondered if those Eat Rite pizzas that everyone raves about are too good to be true too.

As far as wraps go, I have tried La Tortilla Factory's Low Carb/High Fiber tortillas. Supposedly they have 50cal/10g carb (with 7g fiber)/5g protein. I think they are good, though I still sparingly eat carbs as I'm far far far away from maintenence land.

Elina posted about that P28 protein bread on the main VSG forum earlier today. I'll see if I can find it for you.

Found it!

I've found 2 I've started using.  The first is FlatOut flatbread light.  I only eat half at a time, but don't have the nut facts.  The other is Joseph's Flax Pitas.  I love them for making pizzas.  Good luck!

I also like the Tofuyan wraps - I buy them from Netrition.com.

hmmm....I eat the extreme wellness tortillas everyday as well and just bought some the other day...didn't notice a change.  I have not noticed any weight changes as a result of eating them either.

Today when I went to the store, I thought I bought more.... I bough the wrong kind since they all look alike.  The nutrition info on that one (the 8 grain) is about what you described.

Are you sure you have the low carb/high fiber ones?  If so, please confirm so I know.

I checked all the types at the store.  I like the spinach, that was up, so was was the tomato basil, the high fiber, whole wheat.  They were all much higher then before.  Make sure you check the labels next time you're in the store.

Another thing I hate is when they mess with serving sizes to make the nutritional info sound better.

this is really common between brand to brand, which is one reason why some people claim counting calories doesnt work because it can be quite off depending which brand you use...

but since the amounts we eat is so small it prob shouldnt make a huge difference,

I agree, the fibs would be very annoying.

but for specific products, why not look for a customer service e-mail or 800 number and ask the company why the changes?

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.
