Rock on Mz B!   I didn't do this before surgery but I'm going to do this as soon as I get to goal.  While you and I weigh the same, my Tanita scale tells me that I'm 34.5% body fat at 5'4".   Maybe that's incorrect.  Now that's something to look forward to.

You've done great with building all those fine muscles to burn calories and fat.  I'm working on doing that now that my back injury is healed enough to put weights in my hands.

all the more reason for those of us weaning off the scale! it works for weight loss (especially fast loss) but for daily use it we tell me I was OK but I am really not as lean as I want to be.

I have one of those scales that supposedly gives you your percentages and I haven't done it for awhile but I think I approx. 1/3 each: fat, muscle, water.  I am guessing that is REALLY bad!  body fat in the low 30s? BOO!

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

16.7% body fat?? WOW, Brandilynn, that's awesome! I have just started trying to do some gentle strength training (being very careful because of my osteoporosis) and I'm already starting to see some results and changes after about 3 weeks. Kind of amazing that it works so fast...YOU were my inspiration to start, so thanks!

ThinLizzy, I think you said at one time that you live in Benicia. So do I. Are you going to a gym?

I think weight training is great. I have seen the biggest changes in my body due to weight training. It does start working quickly.

Hi, Gail! You live in Benicia? That's great--I would love to meet you sometime.

For this first month, I hired a personal trainer to get me started, but I'm not going to be able to afford to do that going forward. So I'm trying to decide whether to join a gym or try to continue on my own at home. I've been good about doing my aerobic work at home, but the strength stuff is trickier and there's so many ways to do it wrong, lol. I've always hated going to a gym, but that might be the way I go. (Of course I hate all exercise, too, but I'm really trying this time to make it a habit). The gym that's closest to my house is the one on 6th (?) across from the Taco Bell and my trainer also teaches there, so that's the one I would join if I decide to go that route. How about you? Do you go to a gym?

I go to the Benicia Health and Fitness Center, which is the gym across from Taco Bell. Weight training does require some instruction, if you want to do it right and not hurt yourself. I have had a trainer since December, which really helped me to get started with the exercise. In December, I was about 3 months post-op and very weak. Just walking wasn't cutting it, and I knew that weight training would help me to become stronger and build up some needed muscle. Having a trainer gets me to the gym and has helped me to progress so much faster, than if I was trying to do it on my own. My trainer is great!!!

There are some body sculpting classes that are offered in the AM and one in the PM, that incorporate weights and aerobic exercise that would be very helpful. I attended one class, when I was off one day, but I work during the daytime and can't attend the morning classes. Another one that I have always wanted to take, is "On the Ball."

I did go to my first TRX class on Monday evening, which was very challenging and was definitely something that I wouldn't have been able to do, if I had not been weight training for the past few months.

So, I work out with a trainer twice/week, take a pilates Reformer class once/week, and another day or two of cardio. I am going to add the TRX class, since it is such a great workout and incorporates cardio. I'm in the gym 3-5 times/week.

It is a beautiful gym and people have been very nice and helpful.

It would be nice to meet for coffee sometime. Which Starbucks is the closest for you?

Well, it's a very small world indeed! My trainer teaches some of those TRX classes and the On the Ball class, though she's off right now with an injury. She has a home gym, which is where I've been working, and so I've been learning how to use both the TRX and the ball. I'm glad to know you like the gym--I toured it and agree that  it's VERY nice, with so many types of classes! Do you like Pilates? It's something I've been interested in trying.

I'm not a huge coffee drinker so I don't know where all the Starbucks are (my husband knows, I'm sure!) but I could meet you at one that's convenient for you. We live downtown-ish...

I do like Pilates, although, there is a steep learning curve and I am so uncoordinated. It takes me a long time to learn something new.

I know that some of the classes have been rearranged due to your trainer's injury. Knee surgery takes a long time to recover from.

I haven't been drinking much coffee, since surgery, but I have grown to like my skinny lattes (nonfat milk and sugar-free vanilla syrup).

It would be nice to meet.
