calcium might threaten heart health?
This study is completely irrelevant to us and that assumes that it's even a good study, which I suspect it isn't given that it's results don't really make sense in light of other studies and what we know about calcium and the heart.
First, it's calcium carbonate, not citrate.
Second, it's calcium without Vitamin D -- I don't know if you can even get a calcium citrate that hasn't got vitamin D.
Third, they didn't study WLS patients who are at a higher risk for osteoporosis than the normal population.

isn't the deal with Vit D that it helps the calcium go where it's supposed to? (like bones & teeth, I guess) but without it the Ca can end up where you don't want it (blood?) and that's when it's bad for your heart?
I have to say, I hope to understand this issue better since I am otherwise at risk for osteoporosis plus the VSG.

I think Vitamin D is just supposed to help it get absorbed into your system rather than peed out. But it turns out they did look at some studies where the calcium was taken with vitamin d so it's probably moot.
Anyway, this is the big issue I have with this study:
Calcium is important to keep the heart beating. So our bodies are designed to keep the calcium in our blood in a very narrow range. This is why knowing your serum calcium levels is meaningless. Your bones could resemble lace due to so much calcium being leached from them yet your serum calcium will be just fine.
Now we have some guys saying that calcium supplements cause heart attacks. But all the evidence we have says that calcium supplements have minimal impact on serum calcium levels. The implication is that somehow taking supplements does change the calcium level in the blood in a way that would damage the heart. That just doesn't make sense given what we see in the lab and in real life.
I have some other issues with what was said about the study, but until I look at the study itself, I'll withhold judgment.
