What's everyone doing for their calcium?

My understanding is that we need the citrate and NOT the carbonate...has something to do with the lack of acid in our new tummies and not being able to absorb the carbonate as it requires acid for absorption.

Katgroup - just the opposite.  Citrate you absorb.  Carbonate you don't.  My NUT stresses this EVERY time I talk to her and at every support group meeting I attend.

I take liquid calcium ...put it in my protein shake in the morning.  Then take another 500 later in the day.  The body can only absorb 600 mg at a time....it you take more than that at one time, it won't all absorb.

Those people remind me of slinkys. Not good for much but it would would bring a smile to my face if someone pushed them down the stairs.

I'm supposed to take 1500 - 1800 mg of calcium daily because I have osteoporosis from the parathyroid tumor I had. So, I take 2 calcium tablets for a total of 1260mg daily, and 400 mg in my daily vitamins (200 mg in each vit). That way I'm covered, and any calcium food intake I have is extra. I've had my calcium level checked at 3 months post-op and it was fine. When I have my one year labs, I'll adjust if needed.

I was taking the Citrical petites until recently because they were smaller, but I had to take 6 a day along with my other vits.
I decided to buy the larger pills and break them in half....that's working fine.

I recently started taking the Reviva liquid calcium from Costco and I do like the taste.  It seems to also help with the constipation issues that have chronically plagued me.  It contains magnesium citrate and I think that is what I needed.  So, I take a tablespoon of that in the morning and another one at night.  Then in the afternoon I take either the BA lozenge of 2 of the BA chewies for a total of 1500mg per day.

I'm curious if the doctor knows if they are citrate or carbonate he's finding, lol.

I poop regularly so I doubt mine are sitting in there.  I found a calcium citrate w/d at my local Vitamin Shoppe....3 tablets 1000mg and my multi has 500mg.  In addition I eat cheese or have a yogurt almost everyday.

I thought we could only absorb 500 at a time?  That is what I have been told.
