I sometimes do it a little during maintenance but didn't during weight loss phase. but its just a sip or two of water with a meal if i feel like it. don't always wait the full 20 minutes or whatever either. Seems to be ok if I don't drink too much.  Diane

I can't drink while eating. I can take a tiny sip if something is spicy and I need to wa**** down, but otherwise I am instantly full and will feel hungry again within a half hour.

I usually wait about a 1/2 hour after eating to start drinking again, not because of doctor's orders - he doesn't care - but because I will feel overly full and have thrown up a few times because of it.

Now alcohol is a different story. I swear it relaxes my tummy and I can easily eat chips and salsa and drink a margarita!

I've had the same experience with alcohol, Jen. I was in a situation where I had eaten to fullness, even uncomfortably so, and then started sipping on a cosmo and -- boom -- next thing I know, I have room for more food. It was very odd and I decided it was a cautionary tale about the dangers of alcohol.

fawn,

I think it doesn't bother you because you don't eat very much at a time. I usually don't drink while eating. If I eat until I am full and then drink, it is painful. But when I go out to eat with someone, I usually drink a lot (and talk a lot) I find when I am drinking a lot, I do not eat very much and it doesn't bother me at all. For example, I went out to breakfast the other day with a girlfriend...Over the 45 min that we were there, I drank two cups of coffee and ate only about 3/4 of a scrambled egg.

That does sound like me! Just this morning I was at breakfast with my BFF and I had two teas and one scrambled egg over an hour..

I am still loving life with my sleeve! Been maintaining at or below goal for over 4 years!

Nope...can't do it...makes me too full and uncomfortable.  I wish I could...especially wine!!  I miss a good glass of wine with a great steak!

My short answer is No.....

My more detailed answer is sort of, and sometimes, but mostly No...

-  Before my meals I take my vitamins and supplements, I can't take them withou****er, and I can't take them on an empty stomach, so I have to eat right away after I take them...

-  When I am at home I don't drink 'with' my meals...

-  When I am at a restaurant or a friends house, I do...

I think this more accurately describe me.

I try not to. I succeed most of the time.

I do use a little liquid to wash down my vits and do eat them "with" meals when I can. i don't consider that "drinking with my meals" though.

I don't normally have any liquid around when I eat at home, at work I empty my water bottle or tea cup before I eat or put it out of the way.

Sometimes, in restaurants or other social occasions, I do push the boundaries a bit.

I definitely do it on purpose during races and similar training. I eat slider foods and drink the entire time I'm on the bike. It's the only way to survive. Otherwise I'd end up in the hospital due to dehydration and/or electrolyte imbalance or fall off my bike from dizziness. I don't consider that this "counts" though. I'm not eating "lunch" when I'm on the bike. I'm "fueling". I keep it totally separate in my mind so that I don't leak bad habits into the rest of my eating.

However, sometimes I'm not successful at keeping fueling separate from eating and I start pushing the boundaries more and more and then I have to consciously cut it out. I also sometimes get behind in my drinking and then it's really tempting to start drinking within 20-30 min. of eating and that definitely washes food out of my stomach early and causes me to want to put more in sooner. Sometimes it's okay because my total calories for the day is fine but sometimes it's not.

I consider it like eating indulgences. I can do it a certain amount of the time and be fine but I have to be careful it doesn't become a frequent habit.

I really tried in the beginning not to drink with my meals, but it just felt too foreign and I couldn't eat the food.

So, I regularly drink with my food.  I'm not encouraging anyone to follow my lead.  But, I want to be honest.  I do and haven't had any issues with it (to date).
