Food Poisoning Update

I haven't seen Haley around in a while and then there's Kaye who got Hodgkin's and actually found the tumor herself by feeling a lump in her colon.  She's never have found it if she hadn't gotten so thin.  She was feeling around on her tummy and discovered the mass.  She hasn't posted an update lately...hope she's ok too.

I'm not worried. The reason that people with cancer get so thin is that they lose their appetites and food makes them nauseous. After all, it happens to those with full-size stomachs so it's not really a stomach size issue.

Also, I'm the queen of getting calories in... it's called slider foods and liquid calories! I do it all the time on long bike rides. Otherwise, I'd get really worn down and unhealthy.

Yes, but you have to factor in the metabolic effect that getting sick has.  I know when I had my PS I went from my normal freezing state to sweating my ass off even when the thermostat was on 68 at night.  I'm not like that normally but when trying to heal from something my metabolism kicks in to high gear.  I lost 10 lbs in a few days after PS and didn't get it back!  I felt the same thing the other night with the hot/sweating thing...metabolism in high gear trying to heal my body.

And your restriction almost makes it impossible to get anything in...even sliders.  At least that was my experience.  Now a healthy me can do sliders if I need to, but a sick me can not.

Also, depression makes me turn away from food and for many people this is not the case...they actually use food to cope.  That is not me and I've always been that way.  So yes, I do have concerns because I never thought I'd get this thin.  I mean don't get me wrong...I'm very grateful for my sleeve, but worry at the same time.  I just have to look at my mom and dad to see how frailty can set in.

And most normies that get cancer have weight to give, we do not. : )

Laura, I'm so happy to read that you're feeling better.  One of my Sleeve pals that had surgery in September got a stomach bug last week that knocked her on the floor for 24 hours.  She too lost 5 pounds overnight.

I think if we did get sick they'd stick that TPN in us to feed us.  Hopefully, none of us will ever have to really find out!

Thanks for Lee, I do feel better.  It's a good thing I don't get sick very often!  You're right about the TPN and I don't wanna find out either!  You know I did get a 24 hour stomach bug earlier in my losing phase, but then, I welcomed the loss and at that time it was only 3lb.  My metabolism seems to have changed a bit...I lose quicker now and more when I get sick...weird.  The funny thing is, I feel the metabolic change when my body is healing from something and the scale proves me right every time.

glad you feel better, Laura.  please don't worry about the sick thing MacMadame is right. and I know from experience we can get in tons of calories, trust me!

when I was a pre-op I did think about old age with a VSG because I work in nursing homes and "weight loss" is often a very bad thing. but we can always get in liquids and you can live on them, no question.

also, the more healthy we are over all - and that means not obese - the better chance we have of a healthy old age in general.

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

Yes, I do agree that being slim and healthy will have it's advantages as we age.  But, I am not the norm around here.  A lot of you guys say how much you can eat.  I can't.  I seem to stay full forever in a day...especially if I'm eating properly.  And when sick!!...my restriction kicks in big time, making it even more difficult.  And when I lose these big chunks of weight, like after plastics, I don't get it back.  My mom and dad are so skinny with old age.  Dad is now about 6' and 150 and struggles to keep it on.  He used to weigh 200/210 as a younger man.  When I hug him it's like a bag of bones and he says the same thing about me!

It's just something to watch out for because some illness/dementia can last a looong time.

My poor millet-belly birdie girl!  I am sorry you were so sick!!

I am glad you are better though.  That was scary and a good cautionary tale to share.

Be care taking of you, Laura!!
