Caffeine and Appetite

I ran in to conflicting things from the hospital when I had surgery. One bariatric coordinator... the one that I didn't work with but was on call told me that they don't recommend regular coffee as the caffine in it can cause hunger. The other cooridnator and my nutritionist told me I could have it... so I definitely went with their suggestion because I LOVE ME SOME COFFEE!!!

I find that drinking coffee does curb my hunger to an extent (I think that just drinking some sort of fluids in general do that for me) and helps with my head hunger, too!!! I normally drink it with just a smidge of creamer and it makes my tummy nice and warm and helps keep my mind off of making poor choices!!

I do think coffee is an appetite surpressant and I am not sure if its the caffine or the coffee itself. I LOVE coffee and the happiest day of my vsg recovery was when surgeon allowed me to have it at 4 weeks. I had actually started back on it at 3 weeks but with half hot skim milk. Even before surgery for years I would drink coffee in the morning and not feel especially hungry. But later in the day, it was not safe to get between me and the refridgerator! I make myself eat breakfast now because I am convinced that not eating a morning meal of some sort is part of what leaves you prone to evening snacking and hunger.

I no longer use a ppi and most days coffee with half and half doesn't bother my tummy  but once in a while I chew a Tums if I feel a little acidic. Gotta take care of sleeve!

Most importantly, good coffee with half and half promotes world peace and harmony because if I don't get mine, I am a beyotch  on wheels and the world is not safe!!!!!!

 Full disclosure:  I am a coffee-holic

Okay, now that you know that--I looove my coffee

I have never noticed it increase my desire to eat

In fact, possibly the opposite.  Often I simply want something to do.  Not a smoker, and not wanting to eat, coffee fills the bill.  It's a good excuse to get up if I'm at work!

Also, I am very cold natured so coffee warms me.

Finally, my only "dessert" is usually one square of dark chocolate, add coffee and it's an event to savor.

I'm a reformed coffee addict......back to decaff though.....

I was doing quad shot cappuchino 4 times a day......yah....about $30 a day when you count the Maple Oat Scones a couple of those times and a little tip money.....

Now I'm all about the English Tea.......

I do think drinking tea defers me from wanting to snack.... I don't know about curbing hunger.....I think I'm still in the stage that I don't get really hungry.

I wonder if one of my tricks for not getting hungry all the time is to not eat every two to three hours like a lot of people do..... I try for every 4-5 hours.... and you would be right to guess my last meal is really late! I have always had a problem going to sleep on an empty stomach.

Mine stays the same, caffeine or not.  A lot of folks on the lightweight board say that having extra protein shakes takes their hunger away, but mine has stayed the same, and its not thirst. More liquids, less liquids, doesnt change.

My experience with and without caffeine has been very benign!

I love coffee & always have. I can have it instead of food for one meal but, over all through the day it definitely increases my appetite.

it also increases the urge to binge eat and the likelihood that I will make poorer food choices in general. add others things like heartburn and insomnia and you see why I am always trying to cut down.

but I love it!!!

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

Before surgery, coffee definitely held off my appetite for several hours in the morning.   I tried first after surgery at about 2 months out, and at that point it totally made me feel hungry!  So I ditched it again, and when I tried it at about 6 months, everything was back to normal and I've had about 3 cups every morning since then with no problems.  On my workdays, I'm up at 5:00am and usually don't feel the need to eat until about 9-10:00.
