Caffeine and Appetite

The recent post on head hunger got me thinking about caffeine and appetite.  There are many studies that show caffeine lowers appetite, but that does not seem to be the case for all VSGers.

I wonder if it is the caffeine that increases the appetite for VSGers or the acidic nature of coffee.  I wonder if caffeinated tea would have the same results.  I'd love to hear the experiences of others.

You know, I happened to brew a cup of English Breakfast tea this morning in my Keurig and I felt awfully full and pretty turned off to food until about 10:30.  Coffee also does the same thing to me.  So most of the time I do decaf so that I can eat.

Coffee reduces my appetite dramatically.  Tea doesn't have the same effect on me, but the liquid fills me up and makes me feel satisfied.  As you know, I am rarely without a hot cup of tea next to me.  I do think coffee can increase the acid in our stomach and the acid can mimic hunger, so like everything else, it seems the answer is, it depends on individual needs.

Hmmm ... I've been fighting (and losing) to head hunger in the past few weeks. I need to try tea (coffee and I are not good friends) and see if this helps.

Thanks for the tip!

Interesting experiences guys. I'm thinking of dropping my morning coffee and seeing what that does to my appetite.

I drink fully caffinated coffee and it does tend to curb my hunger.  I am trying to keep it at 2 - 4 cups per day.  Think I might try and add in some hot tea also.

I had posted on the other thread about this. Keep in mind I'm not even 3 months out so things are still in flux for me. I usually have about 1/2-3/4 cup of coffee with a little half & half every morning. I immediately have "hunger" pangs in my stomach, which are likely due to the acid in the coffee and not actual hunger, but I still have that immediate "feed me! I'm hungry" feeling which leads to head hunger. When I have a latte as I sometimes do in the afternoon, I don't feel this. I bet it's because of the protein in the skim milk. I don't know...just my experience.

Maybe I should try drinking some coffee. I never drink it but I would be curious to see if it changed my appetite.
