Who ever heard of THAT?

Ok Elina, now next time I am near a TJ's) since we don't have them here) I am gonna have to get some of this seaweed. Whats the brand and what does it look like? I will be in Sacramento in a few weeks and will have to hit TJ's.

Yeah, you are right to disagree with Dr. Guru on this one. The book "The End of Overeating" which I consider to be an outstanding work, says that studies show the addiction to the sugar/fat/salt combination is only slightly lower than that of cocaine on the addiction scale. I know I was a terrible sugar/fat addict. I could feel this well of stress and anxiety building up inside of me that was only put to rest by one of my excellent forms of homemade cookies.

What I really wonder about is what causes this addiction. Is it just exposure to these things at an early age, an innate chemical proclivity, emotional stuff or what? Guess it doesn't matter to us as we know we have this and I consider myself like an alcholic in this respect and take it one day at a time without eating this stuff.

The Kessler book says understanding and being mindful of this food addictive behavior is the way to combat it. I think substitutes also helps especially if they are high protein things.

So it does suck, but at least we are not all meth heads with our teeth falling out. Life could be a lot worse.

Diane, this seaweed should come with a warning for us addicts.  It is crunchy and salty even though it has very little sodium.  Can you say potato chip?  It cones in light green packages and is sold in the front of the store.  You will not be able to miss it as they have a number of boxes out of this stuff all in front.  There told me it is flying off the shelves.  I would buy one and try it right there in the store.  If you love it, buy bulk.  You will go through a lot of it fast.  I am envisioning your car stacked to the top with little green packages.  :)   Oh, heck, if you really like it, just buy a few of the 40 package a piece cardboard boxes of it.  I am not kidding, I like it that much.  (OK, I am kidding a little bit).

I think it is the combination of crunch and saltiness that has me over the top.  It's like those potato chip add, "I bet you can't have just one".  Yeah, just like that.  YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED  :)

There are many reasons why some foods are addictive to us. Sometimes it is the chemicals they add to the food, which causes inflammation in our bodies which our bodies respond to by increasing feel-good hormones in our brains.

Sometimes it is the sugar, sometimes the fat, sometimes it is your body craving for a particular nutrient that you are not getting because much of our food supply is stripped of nutrients, etc. Sometimes it is ghrelin, sometimes it is habit, etc.

LOTS of reasons, both physical and emotional and it is a very complex relationship and a very difficult addiction. We are surrounded by crack too.. pressured to take crack every day with donut pushers in the neighborhood and the pressure to feel "normal" and eat birthday cake at parties. I know I'm not normal.. I'm OK with that.

This is why I am such a nazi fanatic about what I eat, because my body is VERY effected by sugar, sodium, additives, etc. I do not even use a microwave to heat my food (destroys the nutrients I need in my food) and take lots of vitamins to help me with cravings.

I do not even eat grains in small amounts even if there is a TBSP in a whole recipe.. screwed up that one recently by mistake. My body reacts to even small transgressions on my part, and it wakes up the inner addict in me.

When I am abstinent I feel at peace from the cravings inside me with the exception of when I have monthly hormonal fluctuations. I have to eat super "clean" in order to be free of those addictive feelings, and even then I still have addictive habits and thoughts.

I'm not gonna worry about Elina's Seaweed addiction unless I see Green Seaweed powder around her nose.......
Or she starts smoking fishy smelling cigarettes........

Frisco, I am blowing kisses at you with one hand while hiding the last of the seaweed behind my back and looking a bit guilty.  The little black spots on my sweater might still give me away.

I know all about those darn seaweed snacks! I really like them too and while I haven't bought a case of them, I have bought 10 - 15 at a time. The cashier will ask me if they are really that good - duh! I've been avoiding a trip to TJ's so they don't "accidentaly" jump in my cart because of how mindless I get when I'm snacking on them. Not good for me!

I had to laugh that you mentioned the iodine factor...I think you'd have to eat a case's worth every day to get any kind of benefit :) I just read that the amount of radiation that is making it's way to CA is about 1 billionth of the level that would be considered harmful. Good news for us, still bad news for Japan...

Take care,
