Dr. Cirangle's Support Group meeting.. Lots of INFO from his meeting

Jimbo you are so right. All of us went on all kinds of diets including atkins etc and were never able to get all our weight off and always regained it and then some. Dr. Guru once said that the ghrelin level in a person who has dieted traditionally and lost weight is five times higher than that of a non dieter. I always suspected there was some kind of chemical message coming from my shrunken fat cells screaming to be fed as I lost 40 or 50 pounds so many times only to gain it back and more. I finally decided 10 years ago  that traditional dieting was flawed somehow and I wasn't going to do it any more. Dr. Guru told me that this was a good decision as I probably would have ended up heavier.

So lots of people think they can just follow the barriatric diet and lose weight but not have the surgery but we all know that the restriction plus the lack of ghrelin is critical to sucessful weight loss of this magnitude. No way could I have done this without the surgery plus the plan provided, follow up and support of my husband and friends, including OH.  Weight loss is the result of eating less, pure and simple. The sleeve just makes it doable and to me its a profound change in hunger and eating behavior.   Diane

Not alone, JeeYum (that's me saying your name in an outRAgeous southern accent).  I could stay on them maybe up to a year, but it was hard to lose weight because I was never satisfied, some was never enough, hell - everything available to cram in my piehole was never enough.

I gotta say, I find it funny that he advocates the band at all, considering the sleeve targets the same patients as the band does, and that he seems overtly against the DS. I guess the magical Dr C. is just the next in line to tell me that my regular carb-ing it is the road to failure.. time will tell.. 20 carbs a day for life seems ridiculously restrictive to me.. but who am I, right? Anyway, thanks for taking the time for notes and sharing! I don't have a support group at all, and find it all very interesting.

I am still loving life with my sleeve! Been maintaining at or below goal for over 4 years!

I don't think I could do 20 carbs for life anyway, nor would I want to.  I limit my carbs more when I am trying to lose, and a bit less when I am maintaining...  I find I stay full longer with some good healthy carbs in there.

I respect this Doctor very much, but no way am I doing that low of carbs now or for life

Hugs to you beautiful!

Cindy

Cindy - you & me both on not doing low carb (whatever that is, exactly) - I'm going to have some oatmeal  or a banana & I'll be fine.

but I think I do not have the insulin resistance most do.  I pretty much didn't diet for the 2 decades before my WLS so I never did the yo-yo thing; I feel good about that and think it's helped a lot.

I'm surprised the Dr. is that down on the DS but  maybe it's from reading OH so much.

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

It's also not what he said...

Can you share this from what you observed as I might have gotten this part wrong in my interpretation.   I remember a sleever who was 5 months out asking how many carbs we should be eating and he said 20 grams.

I assumed he was responding in context to her situation, which was weight loss phase.. he didn't say anything about how many carbs for maintenance.  But he did say (and I think this was before you came in in the beginning of the meeting?) for sure that the people who do too high carb (which is quite subjective isn't it?) in maintenance will eventually have it come back on them.

I had him repeat it that information to Frisco so I had another person hearing the information which I thought was important. I also believe he said that he doesn't count veggie carbs so he was only counting 20 carbs from other sources.

That's why I said you gotta take what he says with a grain of salt, because he says a lot of things very authoritatively.  Personally I do not believe in absolutes like that.  I just try to take in all of the information and see what fits for me, and what doesn't.  Sounds like the info doesn't fit your situation/experience, and you may be that exception.. there's always an exception! :)
