Vegetarianism!!
Interesting article. Almost makes me want to read the book but not quite as I think I get the point from the summary. I don't really care if anyone is a vegetarian or not. I have often thought I would be perfectly happy with less meat though every once in awhile i just want a choice bloody steak. 'Cept now its no more than 4 ounces and thats ok. I do wonder about the environmental impact of grain fed beef as I read some new york times article once that it takes 255 gallons of oil to grow the grain and otherwise do the things to bring a steer to market. Good grass fed beef is available where i live and I find i prefer the taste now especially in ground beef.
I do believe that humans have evolved as omnivores and our "natural" diet includes animal flesh, fish, fruits and nuts, dairy and yes some grains though for me not in the vast amounts I used to do. I laughed at the part about feeding one's dog grass since dogs have been known to eat it. What a joke. My dog could no more live on grass alone than I could. (B**** tonight's support group Dr. Cirangle said to get a dog to feed your leftovers too if you feel guilty throwing them out plus you can walk with the dog - bet he has never had a $500 vet bill from a dog eating something inappropriate!!!)
The thing about some vegetarians and for that matter PETA members is that they are so evangelical and operate on faith and not critical thinking. Not enough critical thinking in the world these days. One of my favorite soapbox topics.
Oh well, interesting subject. Just ate a spoon of peanut butter. Some legumes died to feed me and I am grateful. Diane

Amusingly enough, after my stint with being raw vegan (so definitely not even a twinkietarian!) and I hit this point where, I was not the waif I had been told I would be, my asthma and allergies were still as bad as they ever were (which was the reason behind the veganism anyway, the hopes of the cure) and I got a cold (which you know.. humans do). And I got so frustrated and had a 3 month period of time where I just wanted some freaking meat.
Well I had read about people not eating meat for a month or something and then not liking it, it not sitting well, they could tell how much their body had benefitted and the meat just was not any good,
So I decided in pure-D self mutilatory fashion to give Trix (I did not know that was her name then) some freaking meat, so I went for a gut churning combo that I thought for SURE would hurt me and then I could say "see, my body really does love being a vegan"
and so double meat spicy italian with extra jalapenos, here I came!!
And my body dug it. loooved it. It was as good as it ever was. Course that was soon followed by corn pups and some chili cheese pups, again with my gut thinking this was GRAND!!
NOW!! There is one thing I did notice though - the influx of hormones in the meat! My body was only accustomed to churning MY hormones around, and not anybody else's and I definitely had the more hormone mood swings, but you know.
I pushed on through. I am no quitter! :}

I missed where you introduced Trix; is that your stomach? LOL
I am an omnivore and believe that Factory Farming produces food that is unhealthy, treats animal in an insanely inhumane way, and ultimately unsustainable.

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.
PM me if you are interested in either of these.

Trix is Trixybich, that chick that lives inside my head. I didnt name my stomach, cuz I felt for sure my **** and my earlobes would feel left out. :}
Factory farming is definitely inhumane. I tried to make myself sick of ever eating meat by researching all of the horrors. I support local organic folks as often as I can, but honestly, for a human on a budget, sometimes paying for a locally organic largeish piece of meat, that wont feed us for long costs the same amount as a 5 cannister of protein. Sometimes living a bit beneath your means is a bit suffocating! But, you know, we do what we can.

yes, I agree completely: we do what we can. I do eat factory farmed stuff I just try not to as much as possible.

Hey Jimbo - thought of you too with the Japan earthquake! The scale of it there is incomprehensible - not to mention this whole nuclear threat - makes me feel very happy with the nuclear free stance we have here in NZ!
Pretty small country here so it has been a major event for us - we are still in national state of emergency. Central Christchurch (my home town) is in ruins and it is heartbreaking to see the beautiful old buildings being bulldozed. We have 2 funerals this week and unfortunately they are still finding bodies - prob be around 200. There were 2 people killed in the supermarket down the road from my mum.
The entire CBD is closed which is actually mind boggling for our 2nd biggest city that the entire heart of it is rooted (technical term for buggered (another technical kiwi term!))!
Brandi - thought you might be a little bit interested in that article (sure beats another post about frickin carbs!!). I was stunned to read what you and Lee wrote about your 'vege' phase and the fact that you didn't lose any weight! I would assume that you would fade away to a waif. Surprised I didn't try it for that reason alone!

Hey Fleurs, been thinking about you too as the event in Japan have overshadowed on the media the fact that there is still an ongoing emergency in NZ. It must be heartbreaking to see so many meaningful structures in ruins and to share the grief of those who lost family. Still thinking of NZ. Seems like a lot of disaster to absorb these days. Please update us from time to time on how things are going there. Our news media is so absorbed with Japan that there is little follow up information on NZ or other world events. Diane
I, too, have tried eating vegan as one of my past weight loss methods. One of my friends had told me that she had immediately dropped 10 lbs as soon as she went vegan.
Since I was raised vegetarian, I can "take it or leave it" as far as meat goes.
Needless to say, it did not work for me as a weight loss method, since I was a volume eater.
Love my sleeve... Now I can eat meat if I like, or eat veggies if I want, and I have good restriction either way. Of course more restriction with the denser protein.

When I was vegan for 9 years, I went to work daily with a bag filled with yukon gold potatoes, veggies and fruit. Love my fruit. I did it for nine years and went from 220something to 190 and never a pound lower. I can see now that even 20 years later, the fruit does the same thing to me, maintain or pack on pounds. In 2004 I was sure that being raw vegan would get the weight off because I couldn't eat potatoes etc. Did it for three years. Again, went from 220 something to this time 189 but couldn't get a drop lower. Started eating meat and made my weigh up to 249. My doctor finally looked at me and said, "have the surgery Lee".
