Hey, just wanted to say: Glad you're here--it's so good to have an expert on board. I enjoy learning from you!

With things like this you have to try one puzzle piece at a time and see what helps. I do think it's likely something related to the surgery for sure. You likely have less stomach acid and/or digestive enzymes now. You might want to take a spoonful of apple cider vinegar with your meals.

You might not like this suggestion, but I would consider eating your meats plain and separate from your dairy/cheese for now (sorry I know that makes it less yummy) and consider marinating your meat in something like a bit of papaya.

I need to look up in my reference books which supplements will increase your protein digesting enzymes in your body because I can't remember off the top of my head.

Well, I guess we will see what labs look like and then I will contact goodlife about how much of a discount I can get on the CMP and then start taking things apart one at a time.

And about the cheese, I honestly do not mind to do whatever I have to do! I am way A-okay with doing whatever it is I need to do for this relationship to be a good one :}  It would just rock if I could go away on vacation without having to tote 3 a day worth of protein here and there and remember to drink it in the middle of climbing up mountains or hiking across vast tundras with Sir Adventure!

I will google around!  Thank you for more ideas!!

What are your prealbumin and albumin levels?

Albumin was 3.7, with ranges being between 3.5 and 5.0.  I know ideal is 4.0.  On my CMP readings, they only give albumin, not prealbumin.

Presurgery my albumin was 4.0, again no prealbumin pulled (preop labs were done at Labcorp, and post op were done via Quest, so even some of their normals are not the same set of numbers).

It is strange that your albumin is low. Mine was okay, but then I am only 6 months out. I was at 4.4 and the doctor seemed pleased with this number.

And too, I have to say, I broke up with the doctor after 3 months of calling daily to talk with her about these labs and never getting a call back. That was the 2nd and 3rd strike against her.  The first one was not telling me about an MRI coming back on my neck with a lump that they said needed to be rechecked right away - and after months of not getting a call back I figured, well no news must be good news, then I go in 6 months later and she is in a panic when she comes in because I need that mass in my neck checked out NOW. To which I respond, strange that NOW its an emergency when you got that information back 6 months ago, yes?

OY!  Maybe it was just an office full of jokamos!?

I guess we will see come May, and I will ask about prealbumin too!  Thank you for any input and thoughts you can toss this way!

Hey Gail,
At my 1 year labs last month, my albumin was 4.3 and my prealbumin was 22.4 which was up from 20.5  at 6 months.  The normal range is 18-41 which means I'm close to hitting the low end.  What does that mean please?

OKay, I skimmed near the end so I hope this isn't too repetitive.

Many times what you see on the boards and on blogs is people taking something that is kind of true and exaggerating it and enlarging it until something that really isn't true at all. Like this ...

First of all, as has been mentioned, our stomachs do churn. So that part is completely not true at all.

Second, food does not stay in our stomachs quite as long as it used to. This is true. That means that digestion of certain items may not be as efficient as it used to be. But there is digestion and it's not like our food drops immediately from our stomachs to our intestines either.

So, yes, as Sublimate says, chewing more would certainly help. But it's not going to make a BIG difference. Particularly not given this:

Secondly, you once made a comment that you aren't absorbing protein but you absorb the calories. But protein is calories. If you are absorbing all the calories from your food, you are absorbing all the protein. Therefore, there must be another reason for the low serum protein levels.

The reason I thought I was not absorbing all my protein is that I thought I was eating 100-200 calories more a day than I should be able to and yet I wasn't gaining. However, I got a BodyMedia FIT and I found out I was burning 100-200 more calories than I thought I was. So therefore, I must have been absorbing all my protein too.

I have, therefore, been looking for other explanations for my low serum protein levels. The next thing I'm going to try is to have my copper levels checked.

I am also taking more iron because sometimes low protein levels are associated with anemia. Now, I don't have other signs of anemia, but low iron levels are often an issue with endurance athletes and my levels are just okay, not awesome like my other labs are.

Another explanation I have been given is that my workout levels demand this much protein. However, I did almost nothing in the month of Dec. and I still had problems with protein.
