Need protein suggestions for travel
I am going to spend most of April traveling through China and can use some suggestions on protein snacks to take with me. We've been warned not to eat fresh foods while in China because of the bacteria content in the water; so, that leaves cooked foods to eat for most of my meals. Since Chinese food usually has small amounts of protein in it and higher carbs, I thought I would take a number of things with me to eat daily. I'll be 7 months out from surgery when I leave for the trip.
I plan on taking some almonds, protein bars and the peanut butter packets that Frisco mentioned recently. I'd like to avoid salty foods, since I tend to retain water when I eat them. The tour gives us 2 bottles of water daily....hopefully I can buy more every day to get my liquids in.
I would appreciate any other suggestions that I can take with me. While I might be able to buy things there, I'd rather know I have enough protein to cover my needs. I won't be at goal when I leave, but I'm not going to worry too much about trying to stay on my food plan. Mostly, I want to get my protein in. Thanks.

Good suggestions on the jerkey, edamame and protein chips. I'll look for those. I haven't found a powdered protein drink that I like yet; I drink a Premiere protein drink from Costco every day for breakfast. I guess i need to venture out of my comfort zone and try a few quickly.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Thanks for the suggestions.
If you like tuna, the small individual packs are easy to take along. Can you let the group know you're on a special diet? Sometimes they can accomodate. Take along a good protein shake bottle and a small container of dishwashing liquid to keep it clean. I had to do this recently, and it helped to have my protein drink for breakfast.
My low sodium beef jerky would be perfect for your trip. This is one you want to make exactly as specified with the exact amount of ingredients and not fuss with it:

If you make it as specified it kind of tastes like very mild terriyaki jerky without all of the sodium and sugar of commercial brands. I'd also bring protein powder that you can add to bottled water, and one of those shaker bottles.
There are a number of other things you can dehydrate. You can get packets of ranch dressing and dehydrate slices of cucumbers for dipping. You can also do dehydrated shrimp.. just don't add any salt to it.. it doesn't need it.
You can also get unsalted nuts. I order unsalted pistatichios from Amazon for special treats and unsalted almonds. You can also get the tuna salad kits that have light mayo with them and maybe skip the cracker. I also this really good looking recipe for cheese "chips" that I was going to share:

Now this all being said, you should know that the myth of eating "local" food and getting sick in other countries because of bacteria is just that.. a myth. The reason why many people get sick when eating food in foreign countries, or when they have other abrupt changes in their diet is because the body hasn't built up the appropriate digestive enzymes for that particular food.
Your body is adapted to the particular food you usually eat and it usually takes a few days to adjust enzymes. Therefore the best way for you to adjust to eating local food anywhere is to take digestive enzymes before each meal.
Hope that helps.. hugs..

Thanks for the suggestions....I feel like I have a ton of choices to take with me. I might just have to make your jerky... I did bookmark the recipe recently. Thanks for posting the link.
Sublimate, I was quite concerned about the bacteria in the raw foods....I had no idea that it was the enzymes that cause people to get sick when they travel. What digestive enzymes would you suggest. I've never tried any....don't know what I should look for.
