The best Japanese lunch ever!

My husband and I had a rare lunch out together today and he took me to a neighborhood sushi joint.  I noticed something on the menu I had never seen before.  Poki tuna appetizer.  Wow!  This was out of this world.  It is made with tuna, seaweed, a little oil and some very finely sliced onions and sesame seeds and some other things that tasted great.  No carbs at all and full of flavor.  This is officially my new favorite lunch.  I need to learn how to make this at home.  Anyone have any great recipes for it.   Frisco......  Please ask your Mom, I bet she has a great recipe for this.

This is a very common dish in Hawaii.......if you look on line you can find many recipes!

Although I have never eaten it, I live in Hawaii. I understand the trick is to get the best tuna, we call it ahi and there are several grades of ahi for sashimi. Did you have it raw or seared?

It was raw.  I am going to have to find a good Japanese market to get it at.

Hey Elina,

On Saratoga Ave. there is a Japanese Store called Mitsuwa

675 Saratoga Avenue
San Jose, CA 95129
(408) 255-6699

Actually I'll ask Keith who works with me.... he is from Hawaii.... I'm sure all the ingredients are at Mitsuwa.

Note: When I buy Poki..... I cook it up on a hot grill pan.... I don't eat raw !

Just talked to moms on the phone......

The seaweed is from Hawaii and it's called "ogo"

She also she believes you can buy pre packaged "dry" ingredients for Poki at a market called Imahara's on Stevens Creek and Wolf. Just add the oil and cubed fish.

She is looking up a recipe and will call me back.....but the pre-pack kit sounds like the way to go.

From a Hawaiian Church Group Fundraiser Cook Book

poki aku (tuna)

- 2lbs. Tuna

- 3 tbs. graded ginger root

- 1/2 cup finely chopped green onions

- 1/2 cup soy sauce

- 2 tbs. sesame seeds, toasted and ground.

- 1-2 tbs. sesame oil to taste (optional)

Cut tuna into 3/4" cubes.

Combine all ingredients before serving.

My mom says the "obo" seaweed is hard to find. She thinks it comes in a dried form in the kit. She said she was going to Imahara's tomorrow and will check it out.

Thank you for all the great info, I am going to go to Imahara's today at lunch to check it out.  I am working right around the corner from there today, so couldn't get any more convenient.  Please thank your Mother for me for her information.  This stuff could get seriously addictive.
