the cake problem resolved -conclusion and thoughts.

My Mom brought the cake over last night.  We sat as a family and talked about the history, myths, family stories around this cake.  Then my Mom gave a piece to each of the children.  After my daughter tasted it, she was really mad at us that this was not made for her birthdays and made my Mom promise to make it every year at least once.  Then I had a piece.  All I can tell you is that it is even better than I remember it.  I will not go into details as that is unwise on this site, but suffice it to say it was heavenly.  I could only eat about 1.5 inch square before I felt a huge sugar rush and had to stop.  I felt no guilt at all at eating it, will probably have another 1.5 inch pieced today.  Even my husband who does not like sweets at all could not stop eating it, so I am sure it will be gone by tomorrow.  I woke up this morning got on the scale, and ..... 102.8 lbs.  I should have another piece of cake.  :)

Thank you everybody for helping me deal with the minor freak out the other day.  I normally eat intuitively and am OK around sweets and carbs.  It really was more about the memories and feelings this cake brought to the surface for me.  I remembered feeling so out of control around this food.  I remember wanted to hoard it and eat it all at night, by myself.  I did not really believe that all those behaviors would return, but the memory was disturbing.  I hope this makes sense.  I am happy to report that with your help, and the VSG, I seemed to be just fine around it.  Thank you all.

Im pleased you got to have your cake and it was truely as good if not better than you remebered, often things are not always as we remember, but it was worth what ever calories for something you hadnt had in so many years...

now you know that it did not cause you to binge or go off the rails or guilt you will be able to enjoy not only the cake but your fond child hood memories too.

I'm so happy you could enjoy your cake now that you have a new and healthy relationship with food.

I too am pleased that you had a good outcome on the cake issue. It proves to both you and the rest of us that for many of us, an occasional small portion of a high calorie food that is not on the regular eating list is an ok thing. Also proves that you can handle this and the rest of us probably can too when faced with similar issues. Congratulations. You have won this round. So glad you could really enjoy that little bit of cake and relive all the history and family fun that goes with it.

I thought of this cake episode yesterday when a friend called me up for a recipe that I used to make that I had frankly forgotten about. Its a thin crusted pizza made with blue cheese and walnuts and other cheeses and is something I invented and is fabulous. She couldn't remember one of the ingredients and as I was telling her about it, I began to "dream" about this delicious dish and felt rather sad that I couldn't eat things like this anymore. I had had a kind of bad day with some poor art results and was feeling gloomy. Being reminded of the loss of the pizza didn't help. But in retrospect, I could probably come up with a reduced calorie way to make this item using lower fat ingredients and using low carb flat bread or tortillas instead of white flour pizza dough. or maybe even the cauliflower pizza crust. So today is sunny and i feel better.

But most of all I feel good for you Elina on a sucessful resolution to this issue and am so glad you shared this on the group. Made for good discussion and we all learned some lessons in the never ending school of maintenance .

I hear by humbly acknowledge your immense (well not quite as immense as before) awesomeness.  I am not worthy of such supreme insight, wisdom and modesty as you have displayed.  :)

I publicly acknowledge that I love you Frisco, and I here by award you the VSG Group Maintenance Award of Distinction for your service above and beyond the call of duty at the Battle of the Bulge.

This is where I curtsy.

I could get used to being curtsied too......don't think I ever received one of those before !

But, don't give me all the credit...... it was your dedication and commitment that made it an easy call.

To tell you the truth..... It was a test..... If you couldn't do it....there isn't much hope for the rest of us !!!

It does give me the chill's that it was everything you remember about it and your family got to share in the moment and it now will be a tradition. Maybe grandma needs to show your children how to make it so the the tradition can continue !!!!

(that was some free wisdom..... another curtsy would be appropriate)

So, do you have the recipe???

I don't have a real recipe, as my Mom makes it from memory.  But I can ask her to write it down if there is an interest.  Let me know if you would like a "recipe".  Just don't ask me about the calorie or carb count.  :)

Sounds almost, but not quite like a Napoleon cake.

Some people might not support my WLS decision.
Those people remind me of slinkys. Not good for much but it would would bring a smile to my face if someone pushed them down the stairs.
